Brodak Sanding Sealer with thinner
There was an old sticky thread about sanding sealer that suggested using Brodak Sandig Sealer. Someone suggested to use thinner but I wasn't sure if it's supposed to be the butyrate thinner. What ratio should I mix the two together?
Also, has this been a popular solution to fill balsa? |

Use Butyrate Thinner NOT Nitrate thinner.
Brodak can be used as is in the can. If you have Sig Sanding sealer, it needs 25 to 50 % thinner. If you cannot find Butyrate thinner, the following solvents can be used to thin it in order of slowest drying to fastest: Toluene MEK MIBK Acetone Xylene can be used in a pinch, but use no more than 20%. NEVER use "Hardware Store" Lacquer Thinner. It contains Methanol and WILL ruin Dope. Genuine Automotive Lacquer Thinner from DuPont/Nason can be used also.

To clean brushes you will still need one of the solvents above.
Regular Paint Thinner (Mineral Spirits) will NOT work to clean Sanding sealer/Dope/Lacquer from brushes.

I still have Aero Gloss thinner. Should that work?

Aero Gloss thinner is perfect.
It's a good mix of Toluene, MEK, and MIBK.

Such a bummer that Randolph is unable to get the chemicals to make the sanding sealer for Brodak. Things are not looking good for Sig only time will tell if they re open. Of course Midwest no longer makes sanding sealer. These hobbies are getting tougher each day thanks to tougher regulations.....But hey, in California we are trying to legalize hallucinogenic drugs, go figure.

If you want to make your own sanding sealer it is very easy.
Dissolve plastic model kit white or clear sprue styrene shavings into Clear Butyrate Dope. I don't know why it is no longer made by Brodak/Randolph. If you want Balsa Fillercoat, dissolve plain unscented Talc in Clear Dope. Remember, don't use Nitrate Dope. That stuff is nor rocket-compatible and will ignite very easily due to being nitrocellulose based.

I think Aerogloss used a different acrylic lacquer when making their sealer and filler. My aerogloss dope has slightly turned yellow over the years, as expected from a Nitro product. My filler and sealer are still crystal clear even after being opened and exposed to light. My small sealer is from the 70s and it is as clear as water. So it is obvious that it is not a Nitro product and the bottle says not hot fuel proof so maybe not Butyrate. I am still researching all this and will let you know.
