SLS Brighton
Title: SLS Brighton
Kit number: KA-9 Background Information brief: The Estes Ranger was the first commercial cluster payload model rocket kit. The Ranger was designed by Vern Estes using a cluster of three BT-20 engine tubes in the new BT-60 body tube. Using a fin shape similar to the upper stage of the previously released Apogee, the Ranger become one of the most recognized designs from the early years. The Ranger was released in 1962 as Estes Cat. # K-6 and sold for $3.75. The Semroc SLS BrightonTM is an approximate 161% upscale of the Ranger with many added features. It uses precision laser-cut basswood fins in a pre-slotted heavy-duty body tube. An internal structure provides for strong fin mounting and a holder for three included interchangeable engine mounts. The mounts will accommodate four 18 mm engines, three 24 mm engines, or a single 24 mm or 29 mm engine. An internal ejection baffle protects the 24” nylon chute that is attached with a long durable elastic cord. A large payload section is provided with a precision turned balsa nose cone. My understanding is that Vern Estes asked Carl McLawhorn not to call the model the SLS Ranger. I do not know why Carl chose Brighton. I have flown my model twice and hope to fly it again soom. On this flight, its first, the interchangable motor mount ejected past the metal hool retainer. I have since glued the 3xD mount in as I did not trust the E9s and it was before the release of the E12 motors.

I have the Brighton kit, but it is not yet built. It is an unbelievable collection of parts! I cannot imagine how all those parts fit it the bag.
I saw it on eBay, and put in a winning bid of $39! I think its last price before getting discontinued was close to $100. The choice of so many motor combinations is quite impressive. I salute Carl for offering so many amazing kits. He truly is missed.

Yes, it is an amazing collection of parts in that kit! I had long overlooked the Brighton as a Semroc offering, not fully realizing its size nor the aforementioned removable mounts galore! I still do not have one, but kinda keep my eye open for one. Yes, Carl (and the whole family) are truly, truly missed. Hard to believe this coming August will mark a decade since he left us. Earl
