They FINALLY dumped the ridiculous single D12-3 as a suggested engine.
I would have liked to see a 3x24mm cluster as a factory mount option or a 29mm mount.

Remember, Estes target audience may not be interested in a 3x cluster or a 29mm mount - and adding the extra parts to make it a build option increases the price.
Those of us who want something like that should be perfectly capable of doing the mod ourselves.
I've built at least four Estes Saturn V's with 29mm mounts, and even two with 38mm mounts (for Aerotech I49N and I59N motors with electronics for ejection). It's not that hard (but takes quite a bit of nose weight). Besides, doing it right requires other upgrades (e.g. Molding Oldies fin/fairings)

Good points all, tdracer.
I'm of the opinion that any rocket that large in diameter and length should have a 29mm mount minimum.
One can always adapt down but not up.
This rocket is a perfect candidate for Estes E16 and F15 29mm motors.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I set my 2157 up with a 29mm motor mount tube with exactly that in mind. I need to revisit that to figure out how much ballast it needs to be stable with an F15 in it. So far it’s only flown twice, both times on an Aerotech E28-4 reload in an Estes 29/24 mm adapter. Both flights went very well (except for the rather un-Saturn-V-like liftoff speed) .

I did some stability work the first time I did a 29mm mount in an Estes Saturn V. Basically, you need the CG at or forward of the aft end of the ullage motors - about 23" aft of the tip of the capsule (not the escape tower). I've had pretty good luck using that, but you still don't want to launch the Estes Saturn in high or gusty winds (unless of course you like to watch sky dancing ).

Thanks, Tim. If anyone would know where to balance the thing, I expect you would .

Using an F15 would certainly be a calm-day-only sort of thing.

When did the 50th anniversary Saturn V kit become unavailable at list price?

AC Supply has changed their status on the #1969 SV to “ Temp NA
Due March 2020” but there’s no word on if it’ll include the bonus plastic LEM model.

I just opened the AC Supply website after reading your post. The #1969 Saturn V is still discontinued. The #2160 1/200 ARF plastic Saturn V is the rocket that says "Due in March 2020".

Oops - guess I got too excited to pay close enough attention!

I don't think it was mentioned that the 1999 version was labeled "North Coast Rocketry By Estes",

Ooh, that's interesting! Are you talking about the 30th anniversary issue Saturn V? I've never seen it in the "North Coast by Estes" packaging.

I bought a handful of the 30th anniversary Saturn V's back in late '98 when they were first issued by Estes because that was the first time the Centuri plastic wraps had been used in an Estes re-issue of the Saturn V. Ebay was not as prevalent then and getting an old Centuri Saturn V with the plastic wraps was fairly hard to do and very expensive, compared to that latest version issued by Estes.

Do you/anyone have photos of that Saturn V packaging? None of my 30th anniversary kits were packaged that way.

Earl
