Neither are even remotely close to SpaceX.

Well, the good news is there ARE choices now!

For SpaceX, $55 million will get you a week on the ISS. Story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/tech...e-flight-axiom/

I guess we ALL better start saving....

My wife said the same thing this morning. She heard about the launch but had not seen any pictures.

Probably exactly where we are today, with a marginally higher national debt level.
Apollo's mission was to stick it to the Russians by getting to the moon first. Apollo 11 had accomplished that, gloriously.

Every Apollo flight after 11 was a mission desperately searching for a purpose, and never really finding one. They quickly ran out of ideas, public interest, and funding.

Apollo was an awesome technological achievement. It did its job.
It was over the moment it met its one and only objective.
Sad, but true.

Blame it at least partly on Nixon. What was said earlier is quite true - Apollo 11 fulfilled Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon. After that, there was no goal. Not being a space fan, Nixon pulled the plug on Apollo and laid the basis for the Space Shuttle, which also had no goal.

I have a great deal of respect for Bush Sr., who kept Space Station alive (barely). ISS provided a partial reason for the Shuttle's existence and gave the Russians something to do as well.

Bush Jr. made a feeble attempt to return to the Moon with the Constellation program, but Obama killed that pretty quick and replaced it with nothing. Trump started up the Moon thing again, but set an unrealistic time table that matched up to the last days of his 2nd term (PR was his main driver). Not even SpaceX is going to do a manned Moon mission by 2024 (very low probability).

Biden is still for the Moon, but has slowed the pace. We'll see how long this support lasts - it may very well fade away.

As has often been said, "Elections have consequences." Where our space exploration efforts are today is a direct consequence of who we have elected, and the lack of progress falls squarely on us.

The good news is that the commercials should be less affected by all the politics (hopefully).

There never was a "beyond Apollo" project.
Not even in a proposal stage.
NASA has dithered with "lets do something to keep busy" projects of Shuttle and ISS, but neither served any particularly grand ambition or vision.

Amen, brother.

Truth is - we (US public, NASA) don't really have a burning ambition to go anywhere in particular, in space. Way too many don't even have an ambition to travel anywhere on Earth either.

China seams to have an ambition to go to the Moon for the first time, and setup a base there. Maybe with Russia.

With a little bit of luck that might prompt NASA to copy-cat that goal and "beat them to it".
It will be a bit lame, and repetitive, but at least it will be something. "Lets beat China" might even inspire some minor public excitement, and get some extra funding.

But in the global scheme of things, we (US public, NASA), still don't have a "beyond Apollo" goal or ambition.

Musk and SpaceX do - they want to go to Mars. At least that team has a goal and is working towards it. Good for them. Maybe NASA will decide to piggy-back on Musk's goals and paint its flag and logo on top of Musk's rockets.

Default Bezos countdown

Did anyone else notice that they screwed up the countdown? At T=0 they **started** the engines. They did not lift off until about T=6 seconds.

And the scrolling ticker that was supposed to show altitude looked fake. It looked like a linear count up to apogee and an instant reversal to show descent. It did not look at all like a ballistic altitude readout should have looked.

Struck me as kind of odd.....
