Estes OOP Wildfire Build
My next older Estes build is the Estes Wildfire. Nice kit, the die crushed balsa is pretty bad but what do you expect for an older kit. This kit brings me back to when I got back into model rockets after stopping in the mid 80's. The first kit I bought was in early 2000's and it was the Estes StormCaster. I was surprised to find the newer kit from Estes came with a different style engine hook, peel and stick decals, green adapter rings, red coupler and a pre-made parachute. I started the build and noticed Estes no longer called for balsa sealer, instead has the builder prime the model, sand and paint. I remember doing this on the Stormcaster and the results were horrible compared to my builds in the 70s and 80s. I was so discouraged with the build, I never finished and threw it away. A couple years later I re entered the hobby and have not looked back. Of course I am back to using balsa sealer for smooth fins. I have a couple days off later in the week and will start building then. This kit is obviously OOP but you can buy the Estes Crossfire, uses the same nose and slotted body tube.

I bought one of these to get the nose cone to do my first Satellite Interceptor clone, then hung it in a tree on flight #3. I bought another one from the Beer Skunk and just flew it at a WSR launch a few weeks back. Excellent altitude and HUGE drift on that flight. Almost gave up on the search, but decided to climb a fence and check over by the Rip Rap Shake Shack before I gave up. Had it not been for the streamer that was fluttering through the fence, I'd never have found it.

Well, not the best rocket I have built, but she is done and ready for flight. The bowed slotted BT gave me some issues, and I did not want to mess with fixing it, so I will live with it. The balsa was lite and die crushed, but the good old dope based balsa sealer fixed that. The paint went on with no issue, thank you old formula Krylon. The decals were old peel and stick, do I need to say more. Still, a pretty fast build for the issues I had. One day to seal the balsa and build the rocket. One day to spray the Glossy Black and red. I let the paint dry 24 hours then applied the thick peel and stick decals.

That looks much better than the one on the face card.
