<In both cases (the yellow and blue), I'd like to find those spray paint colors, or the closest equivalents.>

Don't know about the blue, but cans and bottles of Aero Gloss 'Cub Yellow' butyrate dope can still be found from time to time on Ebay.

I remember seeing those in the R/C airplane section at Orange Blossom Hobbies in Miami, but the dope would melt or "craze" the Akela-1's plastic nose cone. Testors or Tamiya might make an enamel spray paint equivalent of this color for plastic models, however.

"Cub Yellow" Lustrekote spray is available at Tower, but it uses a fairly aggressive solvent. Dries quickly, but takes a little finesse to spray well:

It should be noted, though, 'Cub Yellow' refers to the blunted yellow used to paint Piper Cubs at the factory. As I recall, Scout yellow is a good bit brighter.

Hello Tim,

Thank you very much! That is the color descriptor data we need. Even if they aren't available in off-the-shelf spray paints or airbrush paints, the Pantone numbers and color compositions should enable any hardware store, house paint store, or auto paint & body shop to prepare paints of those colors.

The color codes are good to match with today's BSA products, but do you guys think that Centuri used that back in 1973 to make perfect BSA color decals?

I just whipped up some blue and yellow with those numbers and I believe the yellow on the original decals was a little darker with a tad more red in it. The blue looks pretty good but it may have been a little darker too. I'll print something tomorrow and see how it looks compared to the screen.

I have no idea; I don't know if the BSA had such precisely-determined official colors at that time.

Is that decal ink you're referring to? The colors of Sandman's reproduction Akela-1 decals match those of the online scans of original Akela-1 decals (to my eyes, at least), but I don't know if those original decals' colors were darkened (or perhaps lightened) by age and/or UV exposure.

I was referring to colors on my computer screen. However, I did print off a sample this morning and they look a little light and weak to me compared to my memory of the decals way back in the good old days, especially the yellow.

The online scans at YORS are from a set of decals from one of the YORF members. I cleaned one up for a single rocket and posted it at YORS. The rich yellow and blue colors are what I remember the decals looking like as a kid. If the Excelsior's colors were directly sampled from the scans, his redrawn decals should be a good color match.

If memory serves, I think Sandman did use the Akela-1 decal scan on "Ye Olde Rocket Plans." The wolf's-head-in-the-diamond-outline logo is from online clip-art that he found (re-drawing *that* manually would have been a major pain!).

Default Centuri Cub Scout Akela-1

Just picked one of these on Ebay for under $20. I thought that was a bargain for an unopened Centuri kit. I 'm an Eagle Scout and keep an eye out for Boy Scout themed rockets. So far, besides the Akela-1, I've obtained an Estes Space Exploration (clone of Ricochet), Estes Starseeker, and Estes Space Voyager. All have Cub Scout or Boy Scout decals.
