Default Semroc xKits

Check out Semroc's site -- seven more classic kits, called xKits (all parts included, short instructions, online orders only), are now available:

Estes V-2
Estes X-Ray
Estes Constellation
Estes Mark
FSI Penetrator
and xKit versions of two discontinued cc:Kits (SpacePlane and SST Shuttle-1)

Now I have to figure out which one(s) to pick up with my last-minute extra Golden Scout order.

As if my build queue wasn't long enough already.

EDIT: Note the last bit on the SEMROC site: "Many more xKits™ are in the works!"

OK, refresh my memory. What's the diff between xkits and cc:kits?

Sounds like the same idea, but xKits (for 'experts') are only available online. It seems there was some trouble with some store customers and the cc:Kits due to the lack of instructions. There is also some mention of part differences between the cc:Kit and xKit versions.

Here's SEMROC's FAQ-like 'What is an xKit?' page:

It appeares the xKits don't come with decals. All though there are many sources where you can get them. I'll be ordering the V2, Constellation, Mark, Space Plane, and X-Ray right away!
Thanks Carl!!!!!!!!!

It appeared to me that, as is the case with other Semroc kits, some include decals (e.g., Constellation, X-Ray) and some don't (e.g., V-2, Mark).

Looking at the SEMROC downloaded pdf file it states the decals are "not incl." in both pdf's for the Constellation and X-Ray,... in the parts list.

Where do you see that the decals are included?

My original Estes Mark kit from 1970 did not have any decals. I believe the original Estes V-2 kit (K-22) didn't have decals, either.

Look again. For example, the SEMROC Part # shows 'DES-K35' for the Constellation decal sheet. That is the Estes Part # that says 'Not Incl.'. I consider it a bonus that SEMROC includes decals for kits that didn't come with them in their original form.

I don't believe that any of these (XKits) came from Estes with decals originally. They were added later on to the kits. When I first flew, I built an Alpha, V-2 and Trident (around 1973-4) and none of those came with decal sheets. I remember the Trident came with instructions to put a strip of cellophane tape down on a sheet of glass, spray paint it red and cut the resulting "decal" from the tape and apply it to the rocket. (The first Estes "peel-n-stick" decals? ) Needless to say, my Trident never got anything more than a coat of white paint. (Still got her, too - gotta get around to sanding her back down, filling the dings she's picked up in the last 35 years and giving her a new coat of paint and a nice set of Excellsior decals!).
