Whacky Summer Olympic Events ??? WTH ?
Okay, first off I think eliminating Women's Softball from the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics is A$ININE.
Just because all the other countries would have to set SILVER as their top goal does not mean the event should be eliminated any more than downhill skiing should be eliminated from the winter Olympics because Austria dominated it for decades. That said, WHAT is up with all the totally WHACKY events in this year's Olympics ? White Water Canoeing in a ridiculous un-natural course that looks like something that should be on a GAME SHOW ? WOMEN'S RUGBY ??? (Or even MEN'S Rugby for that matter ??) What's next ? Cattle RUSTLIN' and Re-BRANDIN' ? Team PINBALL competition ? Competitive SHARTING ? (for those that DON'T know, a SHART is the same as a FART, but in combination with explosive expulsion of fecal matter) Some of these "Oddball" events are just RIDICULOUS. I remember back in like the 1986 "Goodwill Games" in Moscow, USSR, a ridiculous 'exhibition' sport called MOTOBALL ! It literally was Soccer on MOTORCYCLES. NEEDLESS to say, that event was NOT added to the list of 'regular' or even 'exhibition' Olympic events for 1988 !

We completely agree on something!
However, I haven't seen any events and I don't know how goofy the white water event was. When the Olympics were in Atlanta, they came up to TN and competed on the Ocoee River. It happened to already be a really nice white water river that could be "turned on and off". They altered a 500m section to enhance the slalom for the skills they wanted to exploit and it looked pretty good. It was the only time the event has been held in a real river. Every other time it has been a completely artificial course with pumped water. It was a good event then, even though the thought of it as an Olympic event was a little odd.

They should have moved forward with the 4 and 8 person crew rowing events YESTERDAY while there were 40+mph winds and large waves in the Rio lagoon.
THAT would have added some 'flavor' to that LAME-O sport and made it actually watchable. No REAL action/DANGER=NO WATCH. The ONLY time 'prissy' gymnastics is remotely watchable is on REPLAY when a major crash/FACE-PLANT is a for-sure occurrence. It's a HILARIOUS RIOT when someone miscues on the springboard to the pUmmel-horse and smashes square into the 'horse'.

Agreed on rowing being boring, but I was thinking more along the lines of having to outrun an artificially induced huge breaking pipeline-esque wave that would dump tons of water on them. As for gymnastics...if you saw it in person (high level competition), you'd find that those are extremely tough, elite athletes and pound for pound, as strong as they come. Their training is tougher than football, and they get broken bones and torn ligaments and tendons more often. In 1996, USA won the all-around gold when one member of the team had to complete a vault with a broken ankle suffered on an earlier vault. She did it....and had to be carried to the podium afterwards. I don't like all the dancy crap, and especially despise those hoops and streamers. BTW, those little 5 ft girls could whoop your Asp. Rocket pun intended.

I could do without any of the team events in the olympics.....I prefer the individual competitions....I do like the beach volleyball and pair diving...there are a lot of obscure odd olympic events now....

Also explains the quick turnarounds, for points? (one little hit and the kayak looks like someone did an upperdecker....) Mike |
