Default Jimz rocket plans

To my great surprise, there have been a number of updates lately.

Bill

Yeah, he started really updating things a few months ago. He now has a link to donate to the upkeep of the site, so considering how much use I'd gotten out of the site over the years, I donated.

Interesting . . .

On page 12 of the 1967 Estes catalog, there's a picture of a Saturn descending on two parachutes.

It IS NOT a Saturn 1b! It looks like a model of an earlier Saturn 1 variant, similar to the real rocket on the cover.

That prototype model would be an amazing collector's item!

When I read your post I was thinking it could be a pic of a block II that someone modeled for an NAR or international competition. Upon seeing it, the fins aren't scale for a block II and it looks to me to be an illustration instead of a photo.

That was my thought too.

It is one of the early prototypes. Bt-50 tank tubes and whatever they could cobble together. It did exist and did fly. That photo was converted into a line illustration later, but on page 123 of the 1969 catalog, there's a liftoff photo of the model.

Just looked it up!

I love those old catalogs. It is interesting to see the shift from mostly-illustrations to most-photos.

The illustration in the 67 catalog was definitely "enhanced," with inked-in shroud lines.

That was pretty much the custom back then, as half-tones could lose quite a bit of definition as they were being made.

I enjoy this site and have made good use of it several times. I always try to include a donation, even if just enough for a cup of coffee while uploading everything . I think I'll go do that again
