Great Planes Easy-Touch Sanders
I have two Great Planes Easy-Touch hand sanders that I use all the time.
I would like to get some more but it appears that these are OOP now. Any ideas for anything similar? Something that has a smooth metal surface that self adhesive sanding paper can be attached to and that has a comfortable handle. |

I have 3 sets of the Xacto contoured sanders.
They are very nice. Watch ebay for those; they show up but not often. Mine came in two #89 chests and one #99 chest.

My favorite Sanding block is the one in the attached photo.
By "Red Devil" #3319. used to find them at Ace Hardware. It is not as easy to find in stores, but is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Red-Devil-33...ps%2C307&sr=8-2 The paper clamps onto the block. It uses a 4.25 x 5.5 sheet of sandpaper (so, it uses a 1/4 piece from a 8.5 x 11" sheet of sandpaper) The block has a rubber pad about 1/8" thick, but I do not like that. So, I remove the rubber pad so the block is flat and sturdy. Now when I say this is my favorite sanding block, I do not mean favorite of several types. What I really mean is I have never used anything as good as this, so this is the only kind of sanding block I use..... unless I've misplaced one of them or forgot to bring one to a launch. Yeah, long ago, I got a couple of 1" and 2" X-Acto blocks....which sucked so bad that they inspired me to find a GOOD block, and that is when I found Red Devil's. I use this for sanding fins, wings, glider parts, helicopter (Rotaroc) blades, pretty much everything that a flat type of sanding block can be used for. Been using this kind of sanding block since the early 1970's.

I have one of those Red Devil blocks that George recommends above.
Agree its a good one. I don't think the 1" and 2" Xacto sanding blocks are that bad. They work fine.

As noted in the other thread on this subject, a sanding bar that has a hard surface (like the GP/DuBro Easy Touch) is for different uses than padded sanders like the one George shows or (if I remember about it right) the little X-actos.
Still, more tools better suited to the task at hand is goodness. I might have to check out that Red Devil unit. And I do have one of the little 1 inch X-acto units somewhere….. (I just realized that that other discussion about this subject — replacing the GP Easy Touch sanders — is on that other forum. Oh well….)

Note that I remove the padding as I like a sanding block to be flat and stiff. If I was sanding non-flat surfaces on furniture, then the padding would be useful.

I just noticed that Estes now has a 7 inch long sanding bar and paper on page 82 of the 2023 catalog.
