...and the last set of photos. The complex has a couple of museum rooms in which are displayed bronzes of the period of pagan deities. The poor, enslaved, elephant is there to tap you on the forhead as a blessing--for 10 rupees (about 20 cents.) I didn't partake in the "blessing", but I would have gladly paid the mahout to take the chains off of the elephant's legs. I'm a carnivore, and I also hunt, kill, and eat wild game, but to me cruelty and/or mistreatment is unacceptable.

Great photos. Thanks for posting. I always wonder how long it took to build some of the world's edifices. I wonder if the King lived to see it completed. I have to doubt it. Those metal sculptures are well done. Positively fluid.
I imagine you're going from place to place for meals and after work beverages. Were spots reccommended to you or are you just trying things out on your own? Maybe it's too soon to ask, but have you settled on any place(s) that's a favorite or so convenient or convivial that it just pays to frequent it? Are you aquainted with any neighborhood "charactors?" My Father told me when I was young that question and answer is not a polite form of conversation, but my curiousity has the better of me. My apologies for poking so much.

No apologies are necessary! The project I'm working on here in Trichy is in several phases, and began abut 3 years ago. On my last 3 visits here I pretty much scoped out the good and bad places to eat, and areas to avoid--not because of dangerous people--(southern Indians are so meek and polite it's almost annoying)--but rather to avoid because of unsafe roads, sidewalks, snakes, and structural hazards.

Yes, VERY cool! Please continue to post as you have the opportunity--- even the 'mundane" stuff like you're "stinky river" thing is fascinating... streets, walks, homes, shops, etc... NEAT stuff...
I'll never have the money or inclination to go there myself and the shows that focus on "travel" merely focus on the "upscale" stuff, best of the best, and all that... IOW the "tourista" stuff which usually bears NO resemblence to the local "lay of the land" or how people really live, what it's REALLY like there... Geesh, I'm from Texas, where we go 9 months of the year basically above 90 degrees (though usually below at most 80 or so at night) and where winter usually means averages in the 40's-50's during the day and 30's at night, with occassional forays down into subfreezing temps for 24-48-sometimes 72 hours at a stretch, more frequent freezing at night/above freezing in day, but *I* would NOT want to live somewhere that NEVER gets below 90 degrees... sounds about 3 steps up from H3LL to me... I wouldn't mind say Christmas Island where it's usually around 80 or so year round... but 90+ year round-- YEKK!! Anyway, safe journey! Good luck with your job project! Later! OL JR
