Since no one complained that my entry was not within the rules, here it is. My Astro Glider. Shown in this (static) picture with a Sparrow for scale.

I hope to fly it sometime next week!

I decided to launch the Astro-Glider for the 4th. We had plenty of daylight waiting for the fireworks. This was actually on Friday the 5th when we lit off our fireworks in my brother's back yard. Turned out to be a good idea since the entire state of Illinois had a torrential downpour on the 4th...

While it glided ok in the yard, the powered flight was a bit off. Still needs nose wait for better balance during powered lift off. This first flight was on an A8-3.

Here is my entry at the last minute. I had to wait until our launch today to get a picture. I call it the “Bitchy Witch”. After flying a couple Edmond glider kits I decided that I could design a glider of my own and this is what I came up with. It is 20 inches long with and 8 inch wing span. I have always liked rockets like the Red River Stratos so with that style of rocket in mind I came up with the delta wing design that you see here. The wings and canard are both made from 1/6 inch basswood and the fuselage is ¼ x 1/8 inch spruce. The pop pod was made from part of an 18mm rocket I had and was 15 inches long. The hooks for the pod were made from left over scraps I had in my parts box. The dihedral on the wings is not a lot. I just glued the wings together and put a piece of the ¼ inch spruce under each wing tip. The canard angle was set by cutting a pocket for the trailing edge so it was flush with the fuselage and the leading edge sat on top of the fuselage. All in all it has been a fun project. My first flight lasted 35 seconds on a B6-2. It was evident that it needed a little more nose weight. During my second flight today I lost the pop pod most likely from putting to much wadding in it. The glide was ok and it reached a point were it just hovered in the wind for a while which is always fun to watch. It still needs more nose weight. I will rebuild another pop pod and continue to have fun with getting the Bitchy Witch to behave and will look forward to learning more about designing gliders.

Thanks

Dan Krause

Dan,

You will be getting a prize for getting the only valid entry in on time on the first go around. I'll get back to you later to work out the details.
