Default Curious: Looking For Info On The Origins of The Gartrell

Squirrel Works produced a kit called the Gartrell. Anyone know how they came up with that name?

Designed by James Gartrell. He was a member here. He passed away a while ago if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, he passed away probably 10 or more years ago. I recall a son or grandson selling some of his kits on eBay. I think one of my Estes Mars Lander kits was one of his.

The Squirrel Works website mentions this, too, and has a nice nod to James.

The kit is still available from them as well.

Thank you, all, for your posts to this thread. Since 'Gartrell' is not a common last name, I was wondering if this kit had something to do with James Gartrell, a former member here who passed with brain cancer about a decade ago. James was a real gentleman, and on learning of his battle with cancer and his mounting medical bills, I listed my K-36 Estes Saturn V kit on eBay and donated the proceeds of that sale to James' medical fund. In a note sent out to his supporters shortly before his death he graciously acknowledged the assistance of all, and referred to me by name as his 'good Canadian friend'. I still have that note in my rocketry collection.

I didn't know that James had collaborated with a rocketry company to assist in the design of their kits. I like the design of the Gartrell and will certainly be purchasing one.

Sadly, this is incorrect. I designed the kit after James' death. James expressed to me several time that he wanted a kit in our Signature Series but he never actually designed anything. I designed the kit and named it after him because he very much wanted a kit with his name on it. James died of lung cancer and for the first year we donated a portion of the sales to the American Cancer Society.

Thank you for the correction, Don.
