Default Estes Doorknob

I've had this kit sitting in the shop for a while now, and so I thought I'd take a shot at it. I added Mike Nowak's/Galactic Manufacturing's 3D fin can and built up the fins from balsa cores and sheet Styrene faces. This allowed me to get a nice tight wedge on the fin's leading edges.

The paint was a chemistry test - a base of Dupli-Color Perfect Match lacquer, Tamiya's Fluorescent Orange, and flat-coated with Testor's Dullcote. So far, no wrinkles.

A fun build - congratulations to Estes for producing a solid kit, and thanks to Mike Nowak for the 3D fin can. Nice products all.

None; just used some fasteners that I thought looked proportional to the build.

Hi John, wonderful work as always. Great share on paint chemistry. I am curious have you had any issues with the Testors dullcote yellowing over time on other models. Years ago I ran into this and thought maybe they recently changed the product ?

Jim

Hi Jim;

My experience has shown no discernable yellowing issues with Dullcote; however, I can't say the same for Testors Glosscote. I have an Estes Cherokee D here built some years ago, and it presents a tinge when placed beside something freshly painted white.

For gloss coats I like to use Rustoleum Crystal Clear; I've seen no yellowing on the models I've sprayed with it. But Crystal Clear is a bit on the hot side and doesn't always play nice with certain waterslide decals. As always, test first.
