I've always been amazed at what the Russians can do with a GDP less than California or Texas.

Right now, they're buying (or manufacturing under license) small/medium sized drones from Iran, so they can only do so much with limited resources:

A teardown of one of the Russian designed recon drones showed a famous Japanese brand handheld DSLR (can't recall which one) adapted for use within it.

I forgot who said it, but with their grain, petroleum, and to a lesser extent, arms exports being such a large part of their national income, Russia should be looked upon as a gas station with an attached gun shop in the middle of a wheat field.

The USSR was always doomed to fail because of their economic system. However, Russia's land area is vast and they have vast, untapped natural resources, so they still have potential for the future.

China, on the other hand, is already a major adversary and creeping tyranny on capitalist steroids.
