Default F-79: A 24mm Canted Cluster Thunderbird

I designed and built this "rocket" in 2020.

It features dual 24mm canted motors and dual rear eject 18" Estes plastic chutes.

The rocket in flight trim weighs 17 ounces. I had to add a lot of nose weight to makes it stable.

Last month we flew the F-79 on D12-5's for the maiden flight.

Awesome flight to apogee. Since it's rear eject it arcs over and starts picking up speed really fast.

When the 18" chutes deployed the first chute billowed and then ripped completely away from the shroud lines. The 2nd chute deployed but didn't open.

The rocket lawn darted but was undamaged.

I made new "over the top" chutes where the shroud lines go completely over the chute, and we re-launched the rocket, this time on D12-3's. This time one chute billowed and slowed the rocket, the 2nd chute deployed but didn't open.

All in all, lot's of fun and spectacular flights.

Note: I'd like to use 18" nylon chutes on this rocket... but they won't fit into the BT-50H tube volume that is available

That's a pretty cool looking design. Glad the second flight with the reinforced chutes worked out ok.

Good job!

You could run a line to the front to cradle for horizontal descent. It will slow it considerably if only one chute deploys.

Check the tiny drawing near the vertical stab for reference.

...and the instruction page from that Centuri F-104 for a few more specifics on that chute rigging method (it's fairly straightforward). All five of the Centuri 'Fighter Fleet' rocket jets had the option of rigging the chute in that method.
