Interceptors and siblings - Intruder EIRP 82
Some of the members of the Interceptor family came from plans provided by Estes. The Intruder, aka Estes Industries Rocket Plan 82, from Model Rocket News V14N1, is such an example.
It's a BT-20 based version of an Interceptor-like rocket. Instead of 2 vertical stabilizers, it has 1. It has no pokey things on the top of the stabilizers. It does have 1 skid, instead of 2. It has strakes on the wings and stabilizer. It even emulates the notion of a pod on the wingtip, but uses winglets instead of the long pod shape. I've included the header for the instruction to show how it was intended to look. I made the parts by laser cutting the balsa, drawing up the decals based on Intruder decals, and 3D printing a nose cone. The instructions called for a 20N nose cone, which is a 2.75" ogive nose. That nose is used in lots of Estes kits, like the Wizard. But, I wanted a more Intruder-like nose. So, I scaled down the Interceptor model that I had drawn, and converted it into a BT-20-sized nose. It ended up being about 4" long, or 1 1/4" longer than the 20N. I left the body tube the 7 1/2" long as in the plans, so my rockets ends up 1 1/4" long. |

It was a really easy build. All the fins lined up with the fin guide. The T-guide even made the winglets easy to position.
I used some green goop on the nose to hide the 3D printer lines. Not obvious from the photo, but it has a 13mm mount using rings I cut (and didn't include in the previous photo.) Oh yeah, the fins are 3/32 basswood, so the wood grain is not so pronounced. |

Gray primer makes most rockets look better.
You can notice that I modified the winglets a bit. I added another chevron shape to the chevron shaped winglets. That's mainly because I've had winglets on other rockets break off due to no good way to aim the grain. I figured that adding a smaller chevron would reinforce the original one, and add a bit of depth to the view. |

Painted white.
And again, with the decal sheet I drew up and laser printed. I tried to capture the essence of that black-and-white photo of the Intruder. I used some of the Interceptor decals in it too. I noticed that most of the interceptors don't do much decorations on the long strakes leading forward from the wings. So, I decided to add at least some triangular decorations on them. |

Assembled with decals and clearcoat.
And a family portrait. Being a BT-20 body, you can see that it is quite a bit smaller than the BT-55 based Interceptor. |
