Doug had to have one of the lowest, still-active NAR numbers. One would suspect there are not too many four-digit members still around.
I recall when I got the just released large Centuri Magnum D Jayhawk in the early fall of 1980 after being out of town working with my grandfather all summer, Doug and Chris Pocock (neither of whom I knew personally...I had seen Doug’s name mentioned in the NAR mag by then) pictures were on the kit liner card, credited by Centuri as having been expert Jayhawk modelers and having helped develop the kit. That has been right at 40 years ago now. That Jayhawk was a fun build and completed it before I started college in January, 1981, one quarter behind all my high school friends. Condolences to Doug’s family and friends. Fair skies and following seas, Doug. Earl

I met Doug at NARAM-32 in Dallas, TX.
His reputation preceded him. He was a skillful modeler but had some 'unique' ideas about the hobby. It was at NARAM-32 that Doug made his presentation during the Manufacturers' Forum about Rocket Golf. His logic was sound it just was an idea too far out there for the audience. I saw Doug on-and-off at multiple NARAMs after that. Always friendly. The last time I saw Doug was at NARAM-58 in Missouri. I won't forget the sight of him on his mobility scooter driving around the range. Doug had entered a scale AQM-37 Jayhawk in the 'E' Scale Altitude event at NARAM-58. On the Sunday turn-in for the event I saw Doug in the room with his Jayhawk. He was depressed. He had wrapped his model in newspaper for padding and the black ink had rubbed off all over his model. I remembered something similar and went to my hotel room and brought Doug some cleaning supplies I had with me. After an hour of elbow grease Doug had cleaned off all the ink and the model again looked flawless. The model finished first in static judging in 'C' Division. However, in Scale Altitude events the emphasis is on ALTITUDE. Doug flew the model on an AeroTech E15 motor. Around one-hundred feet up the model went horizontal and Doug had a qualified but low flight. May there be plenty of AQM-37 Jayhawks flying around where you've gone.

That makes us about the same age. Did your 40 class reunion get cancelled this year, too?
