New Design -- SEMROC SLS Aero-Dart 1962
Centuri Aero-Dart 1962 Catalog Version
Measurements and components list to clone this model were provided by Stefanj. Discussion as well as a reference to the parts required for his clone models can be found here: http://www.oldrocketforum.com/showt...92&page=4&pp=10 Original catalog version used LT-150 Centuri "large body tubes" designed for use with F rocket engines. Many current SEMROC SLS kit offerings use this thick walled "LT" type tubing and components so my reference to the term SLS for this clone I feel is appropriate for this version. I also used a thru the wall fin mounting tab in the RockSim file. Stefanj referenced using 3/16" hard C-Grain balsa for the fins. I included an EM-9115 24mm adapter in the files as this model is certainly light enough to be flown with Estes D12-5 as well as many 24mm E and F composite motors using this adapter. Personally I wouldn't use the Estes E9 even with a 72" rod due to the large fin area as weather-cocking could be an issue. Possibly on a dead calm day but there are far too many better choices of more suitable motors to choose from. YMMV. It's high on my build list now and I feel represents the 1962 version of the popular Aero-Dart rocket well, as well as can be determined by interpolation of the known values of components used in the catalog images. Simulations should be similar to the 1962 version posted above. This 1964 version added a 6" payload section so this version with four fins is slightly heavier than the 1962 version. EM-9115 friction fit 24mm adapter also included in the file for this version. . Length: 38.0" Diameter: 1.59" (LT-150) Span Diameter: 8.59" Weight: 6.91 oz (Without EM-9115 24mm Adapter) .

For anyone who tries building one of these:
I highly recommend adding a motor retention clip. The original models likely used heaps of masking tape to hold the Coaster-derived motors in place. You could make a "headless clip" that uses an out-folded tab up front that latches around the front motor mount centering ring, and extends rearward enough to keep an Aerotech RMS in place. |
