Default Chinese Food

Chinese Food.

Every year since moving to New Hampshire, my parents would go out for Chinese food on New Years Eve.
I continued this tradition with my family even when I moved out of state for eight years.
Yesterday, I went to my favorite ,local Chinese restaurant only to be turned away.
The dining room was closed to the public because of Covid-19. I turned to leave and saw people seated at the bar and eating food. I walked in(mask on) and sat down at a table.
Within a few minutes, I was given a limited item menu and ordered my drink.
A Scorpion Bowl for 2.
One of the items on the menu was my favorite meal, a PU PU Platter foe two.
They offered only one type of rice and it was pork fried rice. Not one of my favorites
They make a House Fried Rice that is to die for. Oh weller.
I was all set and took my time eating my dinner.
All is right with the world.

Check out the menu.

Interesting tradition, I ordered some Orange Chicken last night and am now just finishing the leftovers while reading this.

We ordered a plethora of Chinese food last night. TONS of good leftovers!

Our Christmas menu:

Baked glazed ham.
Scalloped potatoes.
Green beans with slivered almonds and bacon.
My homemade yeasty dinner rolls.

Dessert? You’re gonna laugh:

My homemade flan.

Oberwiess eggnog.

Booze.

Rolaids.

Coma.

Flan is a Mexican custard. Very eggy. Very sweet.

I will be traveling from NY to Oregon on New Year's Eve. Otherwise, I'd give that tradition a try.

Hmmm . . . I was planning on grocery shopping on January 1st so I had my usual salad fixings and vegetables on hand for the week's meals, but I might put that off until Sunday and get Chinese or Thai food. The idea of cold sesame noodles and General Tso's sounds really good.

Fun facts:

There is a common custom for Jewish folks in the U.S. to see a movie and have a nice meal in Chinese restaurant on Christmas day.

In Japan, the local branch of KFC introduced the "authentic American custom" of having fried chicken on Christmas! They produce specially decorated buckets and take reservations for Christmas meals weeks in advance. I've heard that Japanese are puzzled when they learn that Americans don't actually chow down on a bucket of the Colonel's best on 12/25.

We make it a habit to eat out for Christmas, normally that means Chinese, because just about everything else is closed.

We used to also catch a movie at the theater (open for late afternoon/evening show), but there hasn't been much we want to see in years.
