I looked at the kits I have on hand with three different production dates among them (two from bulk packages as sold by eRockets and two retail kits, one from AC Supply and one sent by Estes to replace the one that was blown up). All of them seem to have thinner fin stock, so that it would more readily fit the slots. All four have the same slots in the body tubes. I liked those really robust thicker fins on the first one. I hope at least the balsa is good and firm, then. I’ll be opening one of the bulk kits to start weighing and doing the OR simulation here shortly….

Hmmm… So, it sounds like they solved the problem by using thinner balsa fin stock rather than widening the tube slot.
Since I have just the one kit, I had no other data points to know the fin stock had been thicker on the earlier kits. I can’t say my fin stock is super-soft, but I have seen harder balsa before certainly. I too would have preferred they kept the fin thickness the same (what was it by the way…1/8th inch stock maybe?) and just used wider tube slots. Earl

Yeah....the sheet in my first build was 3mm. I opened one of the bulk kits last night so I could weigh and measure components in preparation for doing a simulation. That particular kit has pretty firm ~13 lb/cu. ft. balsa stock fins. So reasonable, really.

Soft fins can be hardened by brushing them with thinned Epoxy.
