Smile When were New Estes catalogs released in the late 60-early 70's

The title says it all. I seem to remember the new years catalogs being released in the last 3 months on the previous year. Can anybody help jog my memory on this?

The reason I'm asking this has to do with the Astron BETA from 1970-71 K-45 versus the 72 Beta mini-brute, TK-45 aka 0845.

I have a distinct memory of launching the Astron Beta or the Mini-Brute Beta in 1970-71. And if this was true then I launched the "S" Shorty version which was the Astron Beta as the min-brute version didn't come out till 72. Now I know for a fact that I had shorty motors and also had mini-brutes in that time frame. But if the 72 catalog with the mini-brute version didn't come out till late 71 as I remember, then I had to have launched the shorty version.

What makes this flight so distinct in my memory is, that it was only the 2nd 2-stage rocket I had ever flown up to that point. I launched it in my backyard that backed up to a dairy cow farm. A few hundred feet away was this small pond that the cows would drink out of.....I remember the 2nd stage floating out over the pond and I thought, " OHH NO!! it's going to land in the pond!" but it landed on the very edge of a tree branch overlooking the pond.....maybe a foot above the water, just dangling a few inches above the water. I ran down, and waded into the water, and just as I pulled the branch in to retrieve my model, it fell into the water.....but it was only a foot away so I retrieved it no worse to wear except a little water damage.

I can't answer the question directly other than I have read that the 1966 catalog (the first color one) first came out in the fall of 1965, but then Vern has said that it was supposed to be the 1965 catalog but producing it was a bigger project than they thought it would be.

Which leads to: first catalog appearance doesn't necessarily mean first availability. A case in point: the K-25 Alpha was offered as part of two starter outfits in the December 1965 Model Rocket News but didn't appear in the catalog until the 1967 edition (and this makes sense as the 1966 one was out the door before December 1965).

The point of all this is that catalog listings do not necessarily define kit availability dates.

Interesting story!

I always picked up a new catalog after Christmas at my local Hobbytown until it closed. After that, my Dad ordered it from Estes until I moved out. I want to say it was usually in January. This was in the mid to late 1970’s through the early 1990’s.

I got my first new Estes catalog in the fall of 1977. It was the 1978 "Star Wars" cover Estes Catalog.

Mine was the purple one with Starlab on the cover. I bet I sent for five of them because I kept wearing them out.

Understand that, Bill.
I really liked the 1977 Catalog better.
It still had the Saturn 1B, Astron Skydart, and Astron Scrambler, all of which I preferred over any of the over-produced Star Wars kits.
The Star Wars kits are still always available NIB on ebay.
The Maxi X-Wing always goes for STOOPYD money, but plenty still out there.

I got the X-Wing starter set for my birthday that year, but I was more interested in the Big Foot launcher than the X-Wing. The rockets that interested me in that catalog were the Odyssey, Andromeda and LTV Scout. Got the first two, but the LTV Scout has eluded me to this day. Now with the popularity of 3D printing, I think that the time is coming when someone produces one.

The LTV Scout kit still pops up on ebay frequently and usually goes for a little under $100.

I too have been wanting an LTV Scout for awhile. A friend recently decided to sell off some of his collection, and I was fortunate to get these 5 for a pretty good price. I already had a Strikefighter in my stash, so I decided this one will get built next after I finish up my current couple of builds.
