Talking Yet Another Modest Proposal: SEMROC

Given the number of recent requests for digital PDF plans for Semroc kits, I've been wondering if we shouldn't post them here on YORF under a single thread.

I saved just under 70 Semroc plans in January 2019, and I managed to rustle up just over 60 more courtesy of Jason Cook of Insane Rocketry. Lee Reep mentioned to me that he was working up a list of the plans he had, as well.

I'm thinking we should probably contact Randy Boadway to let him know about this scenario.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?

Please respond accordingly. Thanks in advance!

A thought:

Wherever these plans might go as a ‘library’ is gonna require some decent bandwidth thruput over time, I would think. I hate to say so, but will anyway. Randy may have let the old Semroc website ‘go’ to not have to deal with those kind of data demands with his ISP.

I may be wrong; I’m not a network/internet guru, but could imagine the data demands of such as this might not be trivial.

Just one more addition to a long list of why the current Semroc is almost nothing like the old one.
Too bad; if it was even 50% of the original it would still be the "gold standard" of the hobby.

Different owners, different ways of running the business. Randy does us a great service by keeping the kits and parts going.

I miss the golden days of the old Semroc, but am glad that it continues

Maybe the parts, but very few of the good kits.
No SLS, no Saturn 1B, far more discontinued than still around.
Even the Mars Lander is gone.... Sheesh

I met Randy and the guys a few years ago - was in Dayton on business and went to a WSR club build night at eRockets. Randy gave me the nickel tour and was willing, on the spot, to gin up some centering rings I needed for a project. We talked about Semroc stuff, he can only keep the kits that sell in decent numbers in “production” - eRockets isn’t a factory, really, so production is very small scale, while doing everything else they do as a retailer/supplier.

It must be a fine line to walk, keeping kits in production based on someone else’s designs - which Semroc designs does Estes currently “own”? Do model rocket kit design copyrights expire? Hopefully there’s some kind of cooperation between eRockets and the current Estes leadership so Semroc can continue to reproduce classic Centuri and Estes kits at all.

As far as larger kits they did introduce their new “Pro” line - the 2.25” Arcas is on the site - with some more larger sized kits coming. Lately it looks like they’ve been working on the MMX powered mini kits, not my thing but interesting. And making improvements in the complex kits - new color decals and assembly fixtures for the Orbital Transport, assembly fixtures for the Andromeda, resin detail parts for the America...

Personally I’m hoping they shift some attention to the Dr Zooch kits - ant scale rocks!

We already have a Semroc section here. I could create a new forum for their plans (if Randy approves) and you guys could attach them to individual posts there like we do in the Plans & Publications area. If a file is larger than 2mb in size just send it to me to put online.

Bandwidth is not an issue.

Is it in the plans section? (not to sound stupid) I haven't seen that is something on the site unless you are talking about the history list.

I went to bed last night thinking about how there are all the estes history pages (many that are 8 years out of date now) and how we need a good semroc one being that the old semroc site doesn't work anymore.

No, I'm saying I could create a Semroc Plans forum within the Semroc section of the site.
