MRI kit cloning
I've been doing some inventory of my parts.
Ye Olde Rocket Plans has some plans and patterns for SOME MRI kits . . . but not the patterns for the two I want to clone. Is there any chance that anyone out there has: The fin pattern and body tube length for the LEPUS. (I have the plan.) The fin pattern and body tube length for the ZEUS. I suspect but I'm not sure that the Zeus has the same fin plan as the Kappa One. There's a fin similar to the Lepus fin in the Estes fin pattern sheet, but I'd like to be as close as possible. Any help appreciated!

Looks like the Zeus is a 6in tube, follow this thread, and it gives information on it. The nose cone can still be gotten from Semroc, until they are gone, as Semroc is shutting down, once stock is sold. Semroc also had the Laser cut fins for the Kappa One. I just finished cloning.

Thanks for the thread.
For the Zeus, I'm thinking of cheating and using a BT-20. I have many of the conical BT-20 cones and would like to use them. The body tube length seems right. That's likely the same tube used with the Lepus.

I ended up adding cones for the Zeus (three of them!) and two more for the Lepus to my last Semroc order. With the existing cone, I'll make three of each kit, using a T20Q from BMS.
AND a battered but repairable piece of original MPC tubing! I tried printing out the Kappa 1 fin plan from Ye Olde Rocket Plans, but no matter how I address the printer they come out oversized. Does anyone know the root edge size of the fin, or better yet the actual size of the "paper" scanned into the plan? It was supplied by Buzz McDermott.

I am re-doing my original Wac Corporal, and Kappa-1. Semroc had the Kappa-1 fins, laser cut. The Purple, and gold fin is an original, placed in the cutout from the laser cut to show how close the Semroc fins are. Looks like Semroc is out of the fins, hate to see Semroc go.

Can you tell me the root edge and span of the fins? The root edge looks very close to 3", but I want to be sure. This will let me scale the scan on the Ye Olde Rocket Plans page for the Kappa. Danke! * * * I made a guesstimate-fin pattern for the Lepus, based on the drawings and photo in the kit instructions. I believe I got pretty close. I cut out three sets of fins, and started building one Lepus using an original MRI cone and a battered but intact length of MPC T-20 tubing. I put the motor mount in a slightly squished end of the tube to straighten it out. The fins are glued on, and I put on the first two fillets. I'll scan and submit the fin template when I have a chance. With luck I'll be able to fly the Lepus this weekend. I also have a MPC Moon Go and a Centuri SST Shuttle 1 (with cloned orbiter) to fly. I've been very busy repairing rockets these last few weeks!

My Lepus is coming together nicely.
This is an old MPC tube, which had a really tough brown paper "core" and a wrap of somewhat wrinkly off-white paper. The wrap sands really nicely; you can get it smooth and almost glossy with fine (black) sandpaper. The cone is from a MRI Flare that I bought when I won AVI's design contest. One of dozens of kits I purchased. (Along with a Lepus, the instructions for which I scanned and are posted on YORP.) I brought the cone to my high school shop class and put it, along with a plastic Centuri cone, in a vacu-former. My hope was to make cheap light-duty cones. Instead, the plastic cone (which was from a Space Shuttle) melted and the Flare's cone had its paint blackened and bubbled. I don't know what became of the Flare, but I kept that hard balsa cone for the 37 or 38 years since! I sanded off the burnt paint. Once the primer goes on it will be nice and smooth.

The history of your build makes it much more interesting. I liked the old AVI and MPC tubes for the same reasons. After you smooth sanded the outside white layer there were no seams to fill.

I was hoping you could make it out from the pictures, with the "Ruler" tape across the root edge. It is just barely shy of 2 7/8"
