MPC FlatCat Build
My latest work bench project is a Stine/MPC FlatCat boost/glider.
It is being documented in a build series here: http://castlerocketeer.blogspot.com...ild-part-1.html

Looks great. I'm a follower of your launch day reports and so I'll wait with anticipation to see how the Flat Cat performs. I have one built but have never finished it. Did some hand tosses with it and was surprised at the amount of nose weight it needed to overcome its tendency to stall.

I have built many from the original plans. Simple reason is after getting a good trim on them . I always lost them in flight. I usually japanese tissued mine and used L hooks. Quest Flat Katt was just a single rudder version.

Hi, All,
Hope to get this one up in the air sometime within the next couple of weeks. Questor, I recall building my original old-fleet FlatCats with a single central vertical stab, similar to today's Quest kits. How many of these 'kitties' did you build?

Twelve as I can remember. I learned to airfoil, tissue and trim with this basic glider and had fun flying them. Many trees are feeding on these kats. I also enjoyed building from plans and flying Stine's Delta Katt. |

Hi, Aeronerd,
Sorry I didn't see your post until now. To answer your question, I flew the the FlatCat in October of 2018. It launched straight up on a B4-2 motor, transitioned into a glide immediately, and took off in a great circular glide pattern. Unfortunately, it caught a thermal and headed downwind without perceptible altitude loss. I chased it for about half a mile until I ran up against an airport perimeter fence. The pop-pod was recovered and I have since built another glider. I have attached a couple photos of the liftoff of that fateful flight.

Here is the second FlatCat glider I built to replace the first one that was lost.
It has flown one time at a SCORE launch in Pueblo Colorado, June 2019. At ejection the pop-pod hung up on the glider. I thought it was going to be a 'Red Baron' flight, but, to my surprise, the model settled into a stable glide! When I retrieved the bird, I found that the shock cord/streamer had draped itself over the fuselage right at the glider's CG. Attached is a pre-flight pic...
