I had to shoot the (2) fins with white primer again this morning because the color saturation of the florescent orange and yellow are so intense that it "blushed" through the single coat of white primer. I probably should have shot gray primer first.

....I may still have to.....

Yay! The fins have been corrected and the paint is drying.

I have a scale question: as I stated in post #24 of this build thread the decal sheet has only one olive green "cradle mark" stripe because the second one didn't print. I've checked my vast supply of colored adhesive film and I have NO olive green.

Now for the question: did the actual Nike booster always have the olive green cradle marks? Were the cradle marks caused by the parent material of the booster body being covered by the cradles when it was painted white, or were the stripes actually painted on to mark where the booster was to rest on the cradle? Were the cradle marks caused by chafing of the cradle? Am I overthinking it? Do I need a drink? Probably.

It has been my understanding those marks were caused primarily by the cradles blocking the overlaying 'new' white paint that was applied for 'sounding rocket' purposes. As such, one could imagine them being somewhat irregular in shape and maybe even fuzzy or ghosty looking and possibly even scuffed, etc.

Funny how we stress over getting that perfect finish, when my recollections of many rockets with cradle marks often look like they were painted with brush and roller.

Thanks for the info and history on the cradle marks.

It looks like I'll have to hand paint them. "The Vixen"doesn't have time to paint them because she's behind on laundry, dishes, and vacuuming. After penciling out the cradle marks I then tape them out. I then paint them with Testors MM olive drab enamel. The single coat dried very quickly and I was soon able to remove the tape. Even after erasing them the pencil marks can still be seen and I'll deal with them tomorrow. Lastly, I applied the 'UNITED STATES" decals on both sides. Decaling required more pencil marks to be removed tomorrow.

Wow! Between loads of laundry "The Vixen" managed to prepare me a Black and Tan! Good night.

I had a tough time removing the pencil marks so I had to use my "nuclear option:" naptha-based lighter fluid. Works every time--but 'ya gotta be careful with it or you'll end up with a bare kraft tube. That stuff would probably get the image off of the Shroud of Turin!
