One of the design choices I made for this Titan III was to put in a 29mm MMT with an Estes retainer. The stretch goal was to fly with a long burn composite motor in the core.
But the Estes 29mm retainer is just -slightly- fatter than the BT-60 airframe. The tailcones from Sandman are also just a hair bigger in OD than BT-60. I ground all the ridges on the retainer down to grooves - but it still doesn't fit inside the airframe. I knew I had a clearance issue, especially on one side. I checked last night (didn't take a photo) and sure enough, the starboard booster sits about 1/32" (eyeballed) closer to the core than the larboard booster. It's the one that catches when I work on the model on the table. Sure enough, it hung up in flight. I just ran out of clearance tolerances. It's only a tiny bit, but it must be enough. I'll shim out the SRB posts a touch as I do repairs.

Neat photos. The scale of them is almost like reconstructing a launch failure from NASA or one of the big contractors.
