Wow, nice straight lines. Does your wife mask the separation lines, or just “freehand” them?

Not freehanded-even she's not THAT good. I do the masking.

"The Vixen" has now finished hand painting the booster. Just a few touch-ups and it will be ready for decals!

I can see the technical inaccuracies of the interstage wrap, and because of them I don't think I'll build the #1969 again unless the kit is corrected.

Does anyone know if the actual Saturn V was painted Matte or Gloss finish?
I see many builds in a gloss finish. I have never had the opportunity to see the actual rocket.

There have been many arguments on that, both in the modeling world and by space program enthusiasts/historians. I sort of think it started out semi gloss and got flat after many months of exposure in storage, transport, testing, and eventually, out on the pad in the Florida sun for months. There are former Saturn technicians on facebook groups that have all kinds of documentation, part numbers, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody has the actual part number and could track down the paint description. It may have already been done.

It's better to spray on gloss white regardless of finish preference. It takes decals better. You can spray dull coat on afterwards if you want a flat finish.
If you brush on the black roll patterns, flat goes on with little to no visible brush strokes. You can then hit it with gloss or flat clear to match the rest of the model. Or you can ask Jeffy's Vixen to brush on gloss. It looked pretty smooth in the pics.

Thanks. It's as smooth as it looks--even up close.

With the exception of some military models, I paint almost all of my rocket models gloss--and for (2) reasons: 1) decal adhesion (as already mentioned,) and 2) DUST! Flat finishes seem to be a dust magnet.

We paint all of ours with gloss for the same reasons + once you've flown one a couple of times the bp residue and handling to and from the field will greatly dull any gloss finish.

If you're building for static display or competition and flat is required, that's one thing. Otherwise, no.

Thanks for the advice.
Think will prime in white sandable primer.
Spray entire Rocket in a Gloss white.
Mask and hand paint roll pattern in a flat black as I have better luck with brush strokes not showing.
Then spray gloss clear over it.
I have just finished epoxying the Boyce cluster fin tube on and now getting up the nerve to apply the wraps.
I appreciate all the advice.

Default Finished At Last!!

AND........................VOILA!

It took the better part of a year, but the #1969 is finally done! Despite the technical flaws it's still a pretty rocket, but unless the kit is corrected I won't be building another kit #1969.

Thanks for watching. Good night.
