Default Heads Up — Long March Booster Re-entry

A 22 ton Chinese Long March booster segment will be re-entering the atmosphere sometime between the 8th and the 10th, according to current guesstimates. Therein lies the problem: it is uncontrolled and so they are not sure exactly where it will re-enter.

Here is a link to a Space.com article that, with still a fair amount of uncertainty, predicts a re-entry over the North Atlantic. A couple of the ‘ground tracks of uncertainty’ before and after the current prediction carries the booster over the mid- to eastern US.

As these things go though there is no easy way to tell when something like this will make its final ‘dig’ into the atmosphere and start to come down. I recall Skylab stayed together much longe than they anticipated and possibly even ‘skipped’ a little on the top of the atmosphere before it finally gave up the ghost.

Some prelimary reports are indicating the vehicle re-entered over the Indian Ocean near the Maldives (that’s kinda off the west coast of the country of India).

All umbrellas and hard hats can safely be stowed away again.

Now, when a jetliner fly's over head, I look up to see if any debris come crashing down!

Well, that can happen. That guy in Denver with an engine cowling at his front door can attest to that!
