XS-1 spaceplane B/G (links)
Hello All,
DARPA’s XS-1 partly-reusable (winged first stage/ballistic second stage), rapid-reflight spaceplane (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67tbhFzh1OM and https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/76866912/ ) would make an easy-to-trim front-motor, pop-pod boost glider for Concept Scale. In this particular version of the vehicle (some have shorter wings), the small, conical-nosed second stage (which injects small payloads into orbit) is mounted on the back of the winged first stage, up toward its nose. In a model, this second stage could be used as a streamer-recovered pop-pod, which would pull the model into the air and then separate at ejection to land separately (it could be mounted farther forward on the spaceplane model for thrust vector/CG relationship reasons, if need be). This longer-winged first stage spaceplane would make a good glider, and it could be trimmed to circle around the descending pop-pod if desired. Also: A semi-scale version of this XS-1 model would be quite nice as well. The spaceplane fuselage could be made of BT-55, BT-56, or BT-60 tubing, topped by an "appropriately-approximate" blow-molded styrene nose cone. The second stage (the pop-pod) could be made from a length of BT-20, topped by the same conical plastic nose cone that's used in the Estes Yankee kit and in the Sky Shark RTF rocket (this and the larger plastic nose cones are available in the Estes NC-20, -55, -56, and -60 nose cone assortments, of course). The BT-20 pop-pod could accommodate either an 18 mm rocket motor or a BT-5 size mini motor mount (which could optionally eject itself rearward if desired, with a Kevlar cord connecting it and the streamer to the pop-pod's BT-20 airframe tube). I hope this information will be useful.
