Don't make him angry, you won't like him when he's angry

I run a website about Harry Nilsson who wrote the theme song for "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." Nilsson also recorded little bits of incidental music where he sang a few words or just using his voice as an instrument.
So, not too long ago I found some DVDs of the series and made a short video of some of Harry's contributions: https://nilssonschmilsson.com/the-c...0412224605.html Note that the credit at the end says "Words and Music Sunged by Harry Nilsson." :-) My wife and I have started watching the show and, of course, it reminds me of just how great an actor Bill Bixby was. I grew up watching him on TV from "My Favorite Martian" through "The Incredible Hulk" (and guest appearances on so many other shows). Via the Nilsson stuff, I briefly met Brandon Cruz who played "Eddie." He described Bixby as being as charming and caring as most of the characters he had played. He and Cruz remained close after the series ended. I described to Brandon a scene from "Eddie's Father" that had stood out in my memory since I had seen it as child. Years later I realized that the scene was actually from the movie that Cruz had nothing to with! |

Bill Bixby was in the Elvis classic "Clambake" with Shelly Fabares.

Bixby had a good long career, but died too young.
Something that really bothered me about "The Courtship of Eddie's Father." They'd have these scenes where father and son were doing cool stuff together . . . and then move right on to the "courtship" part, which I couldn't care less about as a kid. I *think* that Eddie and Eddie's Father built a Saturn V once, and for sure I recall them having a giant tissue-and-paper model airplane, and talking about flying it, but again, no actual fun was shown.

All the old classics like Courtship, Gilligan's Island, Addams Family, Hogan's Heroes, The Munsters, The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, My Favorite Martian, Lost In Space, etc. we saw as kids. A few of us saw the original broadcasts, but I mostly saw them in syndication every afternoon after school. We (or at least I) thought of them as kids shows, but they were really prime time shows for adults. Heck, even Bugs Bunny was originally just animated shorts shown in front of main feature movies, also for adults!

Don't forget, the Flintstones cartoon was the 'Simpsons' of the 60s - aimed squarely at the adult viewer
