Years ago, when I worked for a health care company (big PPO), there was a car in the parking lot with the following bumper sticker:

National Health Care
The efficiency of the Post Office
The compassion of the IRS
At Pentagon prices

Probably not very far from the truth :-(

I have a BIG problem with government regulations that apply to private industry and not to the government itself. And I have BIG problems with government providing different levels of service to different classes of citizens.

Compare the current national health care provided to our senators, representatives, and other high government officials to the government health care provided to our veterans by the VA. If there is any group entitled to the highest quality government funded health care, it is our veterans that risked their lives for us. And what they get is the worst medical treatment in the country. Both my uncle and late father used and volunteered at VA hospitals. They are pathetic places. Prisoners get better medical care.

Until our government can provide the kind of care to our veterans that our elected politicians expect for themselves, no one in government has the right to even mention "national health care".

If you'd like to read the rest of my manifesto, it's at http://eisner.encompasserve.org/~kaplow_r/manifesto.txt

And now we return you to normal rants and raves about rockets...

I have some Canadian motorcycling friends that make fun of our private health care system in one breath, and gripe about their near sky high tax rates and long waits for non emergency doctor visits in the next.

I like to use the example of my Marine son who separated his shoulder while his FAST cmpany was pirate hunting in the Phillipine Sea year before last. When he went to the ship doctor, he was sent to Sasebo in Japan where an orthapedic surgeon looked at him. When that doctor found out that his company was going back stateside in 3 weeks, he then told him they would not do the surgery there, he would have to get it done back in Norfolk. When he got back to Norfolk in June, he was then told that he would not get the surgery until October. He did get it done on Oct 3.

This is in comparison to a school friend of his who also spearated his shoulder atabout the same time in an auto accident in July. He had his surgery in two weeks.

Question

I don't know.... I think people with poor health habits (those that smoke, drink alcohol, do other drugs, eat too much and become fat which causes high blood pressure and diabetes) should pay more for health care and those with better health habits should pay less. Now whether the governemnet should provide the health care is another question. IS calling somebody FAT using "hate speech?"

Smokers often do pay more, even in employer group plans. Drinking is a double edged sword. Medical experts say that MODERATE alcohol consumption is a benefit, not a detriment to your health. Maybe I need to drink more. Abuse of anything; alcohol, drugs, food, balsa filler, can be detrimental to your health.
