Ah, so. There's a couple of decent beer brands in Trichy: Kingfisher and Calyanni(sp?). And yes, that's Kingfisher--as in the airline.

Now as far as liquor goes, I'll either have to hit the duty free store in Brussels for Scotch on my way there or do without. I can testify the local "hooch" in Trichy is quite nasty and dangerous. My eyesight DID eventually return, though.

I think I would rather take an equal time stretch in Cell Block D of the Local JAIL instead of ever having to be anywhere near that pit that is about 125 years behind the USA in just rudimentary sanitation procedures.

One of the few places I'd choose Detroit over.

Well, Detroit might be *slightly* cleaner, but I'd probably feel SAFER in India... LOL

The family minivan appears lightly loaded. :-) I remember seeing some that had at least four people on it plus the take from the morning's shopping. Kind of scary watching them but the passengers didn't seem to mind. The auto-rickshaws were fun, but I'd hate to be on I-95 in one.

Very little crime in India, but walking is an adventure and you would have to be insane to drive a car there if you weren't a long-time resident.

GADS!!!!

Before I read the description, I thought the river was just a bad road!

<semi-related story>
We had an open sewer running through our base in Korea - when we were restricted to post, my associates and I would shove drunk guys into it. Then we would yell to them to look for my wallet because it had $125 in it. About 1 in 3 looked for the danged thing (that was, oddly enough, still in my pocket - I thought I looked there).
