Comrades!
Well, it's fixin' to snow, so I thought I'd post the progress on my rescue rockets. The pictures are the before and after. As expected the V-2 was tough: only one fin was not broken and the final mission made a wreck of the front of the body tube and shoulder of the nose cone. Because the body tube is so short (just under 4"), I ended up replacing the whole tube. I used a BT-56 rather than a BT-55 because doing so made for a better fit between the tail cone and the tube. I saved the launch lug and glued it to the new tube. While I had the fin can exposed, I added a ring with a Kevlar leader for recovery to the top of the tail cone. Two of the fins were removed, straightened and reglued. One fin was repaired in place. My son handled the sanding, filling and filleting using a combination of Bondo and Fill n' Finish. We gave the fin can a light coat of primer to see how we were doing; we needed more sanding. The shoulder (and tip) of the nose cone was rebuilt using Bondo putty. Notice that the shoulder itself is covered by a short piece of BT-56 coupler material. I've done this before on badly worn or damaged shoulders and it really works well. It's ready for primer - eventually it will be in White Sands display colors. Bertha is not quite as far along but has been much simpler. Only one fin needed repair. The core-sampling portion of the body tube was cut off and will be replaced. While I have the tube open that far down, I'm going to add a Semroc baffle with a Kevlar leader. I'll lock the baffle in place below the tube coupler. The tiny ring in the picture is a piece of Totally Tubular T-20+ to slip over the badly worn BT-20 engine mount section that protrudes from the bottom. Then we prime. Shooting for an early January launch.

Comrades!
Rescue Bertha has flown. We had a family launch yesterday and first off the pad was Rescue Bertha now resplendent in 1966-1968 catalog colors. Flew great on C6-5. The old chute deployed perfectly, landed gently in the still-wet-from-snow dirt; almost stuck the SpaceX vertical landing. I've learned a lot about Big Bertha colors on this website and using the Ninfinger site as a source. One thing I noticed: the Big Bertha on the back of the 1968 and 1969 catalogs is NOT painted the same as the 1966-1968 catalog picture itself. The colors on the roll pattern are reversed on the back-of-the-catalog picture compared to the in-the-catalog picture. Rescue Bertha was painted using Duplicolor primer, and Rustoleum Flat Black, Gloss White and Sunrise Red. I used the 1966 catalog pattern because this rocket appears to be of that vintage: long nose, short fins, original short engine mount, pre-Damon chute, through-the-wall shock cord mount and black rubber shock cord all point to a very early vintage Bertha. In case you want to build a vintage-style Bertha of your own, I note that the nose on Rescue Bertha is a dead match for the Semroc BNC-60LV I used on my personal Bertha. The picture is after the flight. I'll try to post some launch pictures later tonight.

I agree. You did an amazing job bringing back ol' Bertha to her original glory (actually she probably never looked so good).

I agree - nicely done! And that's an interesting idea - gluing the disc that comes out of the hole in the base of the baffle to the top to reinforce it a bit.

Good spot, Bernard.
Rather than throw it away, I do glue the disk from the bottom of the baffle on top. I do not use the small, prepared hole for the Kevlar leader. Instead, before I install the baffle, I drill a small hole in the center of the now re-enforced top of the baffle and knot the Kevlar leader behind it. On rockets like Bertha, that may see relatively heavy use, I use somewhat heavier Kevlar. After I put epoxy on the fairly large knot, there is about zero chance of it ever coming out.

Great rebuilds, Mark!
The Bertha looks great in the old catalog motif. I've reinforced a baffle mount / Kevlar tie in the past. Sometimes a scrap of centering ring stock goes underneath the Kevlar attachment holes.

Comrades,
Just to complete the idea, attached is the rescue V-2 from above in the White Sands display scheme along with another rescue V-2 in the Ft. Bliss display scheme that my son and I rebuilt a couple of years ago. Both are of similar late-60's vintage with pre-Damon parachutes and formerly, with black, rubber, through-the-wall, shock cords since replaced with Kevlar. The white one is back from fin damage sustained at last Monday's launch. I hope they last another 50 years.
