So I said I'd let you know. Turns out the machine I was going to install it on, a Sony VAIO RX580, bought the week after 9/11, can only support 512MB memory. It's easy to forget how Moore's Law goes, and how for about a year or two back then, they were leapfrogging PC architectures every couple of months or so. I've got a newer computer with a 2003 motherboard, but both of its drives are frazzled. Could just take the drive out of the Sony, but one of the reasons I haven't used the Sony much after 2003 is that its drive got scrambled, then reformatted and restored and has never been quite the same. I could still try putting Win7 on the Sony, but I bet the install program will just stop when it sees only 512MB. Besides, I need a XP machine with IIS 6 and IE6 for testing. Sometimes a VPC is just a lot of bother. So looks like the next candidate is my Gateway Tablet PC, even though its battery is dead, its pen is dead, and its wifi is not doing too well either. But at least it has 1.25 GB memory. So I might as well lash it up to my wired network as if it were another desktop. In the meantime, I'll tell you that Michael Covington (an old friend of mine that used to write for all the old home computer magazines) installed Win7 and had no problems. Said it's just a prettier, less pesky Vista with a cleaner user interface. Hasn't done any performance testing.

Okay folks, here's the scoop straight from the squirrels mouth.
Tonight, is the first time (Friday, 9:13pm) since TRF came up that I've had a chance to come over here - at least to the best of my recollection. I've been super busy both at work and on TRF. My family's not impressed, but I've told them it's a temporary surge in activity. I'll be spending about 8 hours on TRF tomorrow Saturday, Jan 24, going through name by name, manually activating those accounts that were stuck. We had two e-mail problems: one within the first 36 hours which forced me to manually push everyone registration, password, and e-mail to them, one-by-one. (each took 2 minutes, and we had over 500 users register within the first 5 days). The second e-mail glitch happened sometime Monday or Tuesday. I got that resolved Wednesday. In addition, I had a bad reaction to anestesia on Sunday & Monday and was doing TRF work, while calling in sick, and having a bucket by my side (and filling it; nuff said). So tomorrow, I'm going through all of the e-mails, PMs, etc. that I received stating people were hung up. Second, I'll go through each user, name-by-name to ensure your account is active. Temp passwords will be: 12345 however, you will receive an e-mail from me when I've touched your account. I do realize that this might not be as fast as people would like and I sincerely apologize for that. Please though keep in mind that TRF is a labor of love, and it's not my full-time job. I'd like it to be, but it isn't. It rates as a rough number three, following: family & work. Again, please accept my apologies. Troy (AKPilot) |

crud, Crud, CRUD, I forgot to mention one very-very important thing to everyone. So please tell people this.
We, on TRF, have instituted a multi-layer human verification process. Not only is there the human verification on your part when you register, but once you accomplish this, I still must go in an approve your account. While I don't change your permissions, password, or even e-mail you manually. I do have to say "yes" or "no" to each person who registers. This is important to prevent the site from being attacked from spam, bots, etc. And we've already had three attempts already, and one undesirable attempt to register. To ensure I'm not the single point failure on anything with TRF. I'm bringing two other individuals up to speed as full-right admins, in addition to myself. This will ensure that we can react as quickly as possible to registrations. Please though, keep in mind, we all have day jobs and families. So even when things work perfectly with the software, it still may be 6-9 hours before you get a response. That's intentional to keep our site free of attacks. |

I do the same thing here. After registration I have to still approve the person before posting rights are granted. This has stopped all the spammers/bots from getting through. I still get multiple spammers/bots registering daily, but I kill them off banning their IP and domain name. The worst domains for spammers/bots are gmail.com and hotmail.com. I no longer allow those domains to register here. People need to use their ISP assigned account or a yahoo account. If you ask, I will change your email address over to a gmail or hotmail address once you've registered.

Hotmail has been notorious for spammers since its inception. You would think that Google would get a better handle on their spam accounts, especially with Yahoo! out performing them in that area.
