Exclamation Revised Design -- Cherokee Double-D

When I originally put this idea together, I wasn't as familiar with the flight dynamics as I pretend to be today , so I went back to the last-known version that matched what I think everyone has built. The flight envelope has always been marginal, with a low-impulse boost and some higher-than-desired Dv numbers. This version opens up some possibilities that might make this design more user-friendly, as well as suggesting what could happen if ever we get any new 24mm BP engines with a stronger spike.

I present the CDD + 3, which is simply the stock CDD, but enhanced with a long 24mm mount in the sustainer, and three 13mm strap-ons for the booster (Booster Boosters). What's really interesting is that the best performance is achieved with 1/2A3 power, and not a full A3 or A10.

The design includes a mass of 3 oz in the payload bay, simulating the weight of a BoosterVision camera and 9V battery.

Length: 30.90"
Diameter: 1.32" (BT-55)
Fin Span: 6.24"
Weight: 6.3oz (Including camera)

Launch Rod: 48" x 3/16"

D12-0, (3) 1/2A3-2T / D12-7......1700'......Dv 7-23 FPS
D12-0, (3) 1/2A3-2T / E9-8.......2270'......Dv 15-37 FPS

Enjoy!

Pretty cool with the addition of the strap-ons to add some punch to the booster. It has a menacing appearance now!

When I first opened the file in RockSim I didn't look at the 3-D image you posted and I thought one of your booster nose cones had broken loose and was trying to run away ..... and then I realized it was the "Camera Aeroshell"

Thanks, Steve. The design has been one of my favorites, even though I've never flown mine. I still have Phread's decal sheet for it, waiting to be applied.

Question: What's the rocket in your avatar?

It's the AAA Model Aviation Fuels Magnum Nike Ram 2

While laid up and recovering from surgery last spring I purchased all the major components pictured from Mike Stoop with Madcow Rocketry. I also have a red nose cone from Madcow same as the black one should I decide to use red instead of black. These are beautiful plastic molded PNC-80K replacements.

I have several fin sets that Barry with LOC / Precision custom cut for me to the dimensions forum member SEL measured from his original AAA kit set. There were 3 fin and four fin versions of this rocket, I am leaning towards building the four fin version. Decals are vinyl from Dave Rose @ Graphix n Stuff. He does great custom work.

I promised Darryl at Rocketry Planet a build article so I really need to get cracking ..... again.

Bet you're sorry now you asked what rockets in my avatar!

Looks like a project, Steve. Wish I had the room to put larger models, but then again, I don't have any place nearby to fly them. I was just curious about the design, wasn't familiar with it.
