Earl-
Please make sure to email a copy of the catalog scans to me.

I too am amazed as to how many replies/views this thread has, but Xacto does reach across many hobbies. Rocketry, all forms of R/C, plastic modeling, model railroading, etc.

My favorite is the #6.
My big #6 handle appropriately nicknamed ‘The Big Honker’ is my favorite too. I have to email Sue tonight. When I run out of those vintage "wide" #24 blades I’m gonna be heartbroken

Got your PM Steve.

Ya know, I think we are whittling away at the list of words from which we can make puns. When we run out, I guess we will have to chuck this entire discussion!

Steve-
Just keep the blades sharp. Most likely will last a lifetime unless you break one.
The blades that fit the #6 handles are quite a bit tougher than those that fit the #1 handle.
I don't even bother sharpening #11 blades. When they dull or break, I just wrap them several times in masking tape and chuck em in the trash.
The one exception to toughness of blades for the #6 handle is the #2 blade.
Those are a bit more fragile than the #24, #25, #23X, #22, and #19.

I'll scan it all (I've only just started the first few pages) and email it to you just for info. Good to see some of the product and packaging designs to be able to better date some of the Xacto items that come up for purchase.

Especially helpful is the last page of the catalog with provides a cross reference between the 'old' Xacto part numbers and the 'new' (probably computer based) part numbers they were switching to at the time.

Steve, I don't have your email address. If you want, send me a PM with it and I'll add you to that distribution list.

I'll probably have it done maybe sometime towards the end of this next coming week.

Earl

I'd like a copy to, Earl. I can then upload it to my website and put a download link here for others that might like it.

The #1 handle now has a #12 blade but came with a #11.
The #6 handle had a #24, but now has a #2 blade.
I seem to recall it being called "standard craft tool set" but no longer have the box.

I was just digging through some stuff the neighbor gave me and found a set like this.

Earl-
Just finished looking through that 1978 Xacto catalog.
Noticed most of the leathercrafting tools and linoleum tools were gone compared to the 69/70 catalog. Some new tools were added like the "Push/Pull" drill and the Anvil.
Would really like to see an early 50s and late 50s catalog to see what was offered and when.
I have seen covers of those catalogs, but never the contents.

Glad you received it ok; most everybody responded they had received it and I suspect Scott will be posting it and the other Xacto docs soon for others to peruse as well.

But yes, I wish I could find more of the vintage catalogs...they are just dang hard to find. I’d like to have some from the 50s like you said and I’d really like to have a couple from the very early 70s as well, say around 71-73 or so. Maybe some of those will eventually pop up.

I have been getting some of the various Xacto booklets and carving guides and such from the early 70s and some of those might have a page or two of some knives, knife sets, blades, etc., and one can see some subtle changes in product from some of that, compared to the 69-70 catalog and certainly the 1978 catalog. I guess every little piece of info helps in some way.

As other related docs come to light I will report what I find. If others do the same, that will certainly help.

And thanks in advance to Scott for posting some of these bigger scanned documents here that are hard to email back and forth.

Earl
