Estes #2001 Saturn V "Starter Kit"
We had to replace our furnace a month or so ago so I had to move around all kinds of rocketry items I hadn't seen in 10 years or more. I came across a new in box SV as stated above that JC Penney's sold at one time. Anyone else ever hear of this starter kit? It has the complete #2001 kit, a launch pad and controller and some D12-3 motors. I remember buying it off of eBay years ago and realizing it was a very unique item back then. The box itself is just a plain brown box that has custom dividers in it to separate all the pieces.

I only remember the usual Sears kits, as a kid we didn't have a JC Penney nearby, only a catalog store. It's a 2001 kit? Then that places it between 1988 and 1994. How interesting, that makes it a whole lot more modern than I thought.

Ya, #2001. The long, single BT-101 tube and #2001 instructions.

Yeah, what I meant was the "department store" kits I remember were probably from the 70's, I didn't know that Estes marketed them in the early 90's or so.

My mom bought me the Citation Series (Patriot, Bomarc, Quasar) from Broadway on her store CC when they were in distribution. Department stores have a tendency to have high value high price offerings to encourage credit users to spend more. maybe Estes v3.0 should re-release the SV starter for current store card focused outlets!
I think those were the only rockets she ever bought me, except for that run to Enerjet on Indian School Rd, when I got those G76's, 2650's, 2250's, and the not available in CA F67's. I think it was the only time I begged my parents for "stuff". Just Jerry |

Scott,
Never seen or heard of it. Would you post a photo or two? Steve |

Yes, heard about it from the guy who 'sold' the idea to JC Pennys.
Back around 1989 when AeroTech was trying to break into the hobby distributor market we hired a sales rep for the Southern states (The country was divided into territories by the sales reps) who had talked to Estes about the idea of a Saturn V starter set. Estes was interested but there would need to be enough orders/sales to make it work. This sales rep had an inside angle with JC Pennys and convinced them to order the Saturn V SS as an exclusive item. The rep received a pretty good commission check from that.

Bob-
Any recollection by chance of the quantity of sets JC Penny bought? Thanks, Earl
