FSI Wadding?
I like the old FSI Wadding and I was thinking that I might make a batch. However, I dug out an open bag and it doesn't appear to be what I thought that it was. I thought that it was just flame-proofed cotton. However, the packaging claims that it's some sort of ceramic fiber. Does anybody here happen to know what this stuff is?

Ok. This looks like a case where I should have used Google first. I had never heard of ceramic fiber insulation before. It looks like that's what this stuff is. It looks like your can buy the stuff at any home store.
However, it doesn't really look to be biodegradable. I may have to go with the flame-proofed cotton idea . I probably shouldn't use this stuff. Stan |

You want something like Estes wadding, but beefier, make up a batch of wadding using blue shop towels.

Huh - I always thought it was cotton, too. In all the years I've been Flying with FSI (sorry), I've never opened, let alone used, the wadding that came with the kits. Side Note: Earlier kits came with a more obvious type of insulation (see photo #2). Never used that either.

Thanks for the idea wolf. I knew that people used paper towels, but I like the blue shop towel idea. I might even have some. I'll have to look. Stan |

Are you aware of cellulose insulation? A $12 bale of the stuff from Home Depot will last you a lifetime! It is flame resistant and biodegradable. Some call it "dog barf" due to it's appearance on the ground when it gets wet.

I think the old FSI wadding was White colored Owens-Corning FIBREGLASS insulation.
Sounds like a bonehead idea from that company.

I remember it being fiberglass too. I still have some around here somewhere in one of my boxes of kits.

One of the truly DUMBEST ideas EVERRRRR in model rocketry.
Not surprised it came from FSI. We used to make our own wadding from soaking/drying paper towel in borax solution.

For regular model rockets, nothing beats Estes wadding. For mid-power I make my own by dunking an entire roll of TP in borax solution (Walmart sells 20 Mule Team Borax, with the laundry products). Allow a week or two for the roll to dry.
Paper towels work, I just find them a little stiff after drying out. Crumpling them repeatedly would probably help.
