Chris Michielssen recently finished a build of the ASP Micro Jayhawk on his blog, and he always has great building tips, so it might be worthwhile to check it out. He did a build on the ASP Micro Corporal not too long ago as well.

Andy, that Micro Jayhawk is really nice! Chris also has a number of nice cardstock micro models, with great color and graphics. I have the MMX Red Max printed, its been awhile and I had forgotten about it. I just found it this morning in a folder of project stuff on my workbench shelf.

I always thought it was funny that Quest started the Micro Maxx rockets with the plastic bricks but never added any more rockets. Those plastic rockets were terrible flyers. If it hadn't been for all the other rocket companies coming in and making real nice flying rockets to use all those motors I wonder what they would have done with them.
I see a lot of builders of Micro Maxx use super glue more these days. That's something I will have to try to master. |

In the WOOSH club, I guess I have the reputation of being the Micromaxx guy.
Since about 2012, I have been building downscales of various rockets from Estes, Centuri, MPC, MRI... anything I could find a scan for decals I've tried to make...at this point I'm up to about 80 or so. I have a preference for minimum diameter rockets in MMX, they get the most altitude and working out the scale dimensions is fairly easy. I design a body tube wrap that I print on self-adhesive label paper, and then make the fins from cereal box cardboard (the fins are also "skins" printed on label paper). I use kevlar thread for the shock cord, cut pieces of used MMX motors for the engine blocks, and nose cones from my 3D printer. The stands I make from "wooden nickels" from the craft store and a bit of 1/4 inch dowel. Before I had a 3D printer, I made nose cones in a pencil sharpener with 1/4 inch dowel, and used a paper wrap for the shoulder (four examples of those is shown in the attached picture, the EAC Viper, Iris, Titan and Aerobee-Hi). The body tubes I use I order from ASP. Shown in the picture are models I am prepping for the WOOSH Micromaxx theme launch this Saturday (we are having it in the parking lot of HobbyTown - another advantage of MMX): Estes Scorpion (2 stage), Centuri Javelin, Estes Sky Hook, Estes Screaming Eagle, Estes EAC Viper, Estes Der Big Red Max, Quest Aerobee-Hi, Centuri Hornet, Estes Courier, Estes Titan, Estes Blazer, Centuri Centurion, Estes Star Trek (from the starter set), and the Estes Big Bertha. The Big Bertha is actually a wrap set I made for the only MMX kit Quest released (at least that I am aware of)...the "Boingo" It was only sold in bulk packs, and uses an ear plug for a nose cone that makes it bounce (boing) on recovery.

CenturiKid, these look outstanding. Nice job. I was wondering if I could make paper wraps for the fins and body tubes and you have answered that question. I have a 3D printer but I haven't been too lucky with printing out nose cones for MMX size tubes yet. Thanks for your post.

Art Applewhite has quite a few nice print and fold micromax rockets here:

Where's the Kaboom ?
It was with the SpaceX SN10. As long as nobody gets injured, I LIKE Prangs, Catos, and Explosions. POWR-Prangs are the best. Best way to guarantee a Powr-Prang is using a UPPER stage engine in the BOOSTER of a 2 stage rocket.

Thanks! If you decide to try and put together some wraps, let me know....I have a lot of dimensions worked out for MMX-sized wraps. I do most of my work in CorelDraw... I have scaled these up to BT-5 size to fly on mini motors as well. Vector graphics are a great way to go, you can trace the detail as large as you need to and then scale it down without quality loss.
As far as printing MMX cones... I have had mixed success. Most of the cones you see in that picture ate downscales of Doug Holverson's (sorry if that is a misspelling!) Centuri "5" series cones (from thingiverse). For whatever reason, sometimes I downscale a cone and it looks great in the slicer, but when I try to print it it starts mid-air instead of on the build plate. I still haven't figured out why that is yet. Also, with these small cones I find printing with a small layer height and using a raft helps. I mostly print in PLA. Quote:
