Not true, but has been discussed in other non-rocketry forums quite adequately, so I will simply point out that that is a false statement. No need to re-create those discussions here on a rocketry related forum, simply pop over to the main Wheresgeorge forum or (if you are one of the 3 people on Earth still using USENET) pop over to news:rec.collecting.coins

Humboldt County in northern California has had a local currency called Humboldt Bucks for a decade, most of the food is produced locally (excellent dairy, eggs and meat, stand in the right place and you can see where most of the local food comes from). The Farmer's Markets offer far more variety the the supermarket.

People there can live well with little money. It's a good idea that could spread and keep small communities afloat and even become profitable.

I liked using coins while in England and Ireland, more convenient, you just have to remember to use them and not just dump them in your pocket.

TOTALLY buy into the war theories proposed by both Jonathan and Luke here; DIVIDE AND CONQUER then SUBJUGATE the remaining Enemy.
That friends is the PROPER way to fight a war; if you piss us off enough that we have to come in, you are gonna be under OUR rule for at least 50 years and WE will be TAKING your natural resources for not only to pay for the Ordnance expended, but also for the labor of our military as well as due to the CORRECT SPOILS OF WAR benefit.
PC is NO way to EVER fight a war; If it was up to me, the hills of Tora Bora would have been turned into a GLASS PARKING LOT and we would confiscate the entire Opium crop and give it to the US Pharmaceutical industry for pain killer production.
Those under US rule in Afghanistan and Iraq would toe the line or face a 30-cent bullet, PERIOD.

Agree that with the exception of the "Desert Storm" Gulf War of '91, there has not been a decent correctly-fought war since the end of WWII.

Do not agree that we have idiots for Generals; the idiot politicians that run PC war policy under the MORONIC LBJ model CASTRATE Generals/Admirals that mostly want to do nothing but KICK ASS and get the job done quickly.

Afghanistan IS winnable; we just have to ignore the urge to respond to mamby-pamby PC nonsense, and just relentlessly blast, shoot, and beat that armpit of the world into submission.
If the UN does not like it, tell them to go to HELL and kick them OUT of NYC; they need USA funding WAY more than we have EVER needed ANYTHING from them.

In any war, the politicians should just turn the Generals and Admirals LOOSE to achieve victory and leave those EXPERTS ALONE to get it done.

As far as the dollar coins go, I actually don't mind them and actually like them.
I'd like them even more if they were made of metal (such as the peace dollars were) that has some value such as silver.
Now if we could just get rid of all the STOOPYD one-cent coins, we would be doing something.
I'd just as soon round everything up to the nearest nickel.

There is a nice poster/sticker graphic prepared many years ago to help get rid of the one cent coin. It even used a cool "rare" cent in the central image.

LOL!

Just google "dollar coin dislike" or something similar and you will find multitudes of hits showing the dislike of dollar coins.

That proves nothing. you can Google anything with a negative word and get results.

Fred-
I really like that graphic you attached for getting rid of pennies.
Those coins have been a nuisance since some time in the late 70's.
When you have to have a JAR FULL to purchase a taco or double cheeseburger, they are an obsolete waste of perfectly good copper (now copper plated zinc since 1982) that should be recalled.

Anyone who wants to get rid of your worthless pennies (sorry Fred, cents) can send them all to me!
