That's some interesting history on the Bumbershoot - definitely let me know if you do manage to get a copy of the plans! Even with the engine in, the whole thing feels nose-heavy, but I didn't have any issues with it flying upwards (yet - think I've had 3-4 flights with it so far).
I flew it on a D12-0, which is friction-fitted with masking tape. The umbrella at the top is kept furled during flight by thread wrapped around it, then threaded through some eye-bolts and holes in the body tube. At ejection, the thread burns through, and releases the umbrella to spring open (it's one of those "automatic" umbrellas). As it descends, it tends to shift from an upright orientation to a more tip down one, but it did land gently. For storage, it still has the umbrella snap-strap to wrap around and keep the umbrella closed. I've added some detail photos for folks to check out. The red threading shows how the umbrella was secured for launch.

Flight photos
Here are some additional pix of it in flight, plus a shot of the nosecone.
It flew up pretty straight, and opened upright, then tended to tip over to a more sideways orientation as it descended.

Wow, great photos and flight, Thanks for posting them!! Interesting how it tips sideways and recovers somewhat nose down. I suppose that may minimize the distance it might drift away from the launch pads. The photo with it coming down sideways kind of looks like one of those little umbrellas they put in cocktail drinks.
