Default Iranian SHAHED-136 "Kamikaze Drone" . . .

Iranian SHAHED-136 "Kamikaze Drone" . . .

These are current;y being used by Russia, against Ukraine. They are relatively small and are more of an "intimidation / harassment" weapon. They only carry about 80 lb of explosives.

It uses a rocket motor for launch / take-off, then is propeller-driven, in flight.

, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, TURMOIL, FIASCOS, and HAVOC !

BUT, since it is "rocket-launched", it is eligible for "Sport Scale", since no dimensioned drawings are, as yet, available.

Ironically (for Iran), appears to be a copy of the Israeli Harpy.

The news gave the impression it was a guided buzz-bomb.

Based on where it is produced, it HAS to be a POS.
Based on news reports, it seems barely capable of "minute of CITY" accuracy.

Well, Ukraine MAY have GPS Jamming or GPS location spoofing technology, that could fool the onboard GPS receiver into thinking it is someplace else.

Not saying that's what is happening, but *if* Ukraine did have a decent number of them, those could be very useful to help protect key infrastucture points and/or critical buildings.

It is EASY to use onboard GPS to automatically steer to any place on the planet that the craft has the range to fly to.

When I got into building my own Quadcopter mostly from scratch, I learned how to use a $25 control board and $35 GPS receiver, and use opensource software to program it to fly any course I wanted it to fly, including the "descent" phase. I'm sort of surprised (and relieved) that so far, no terrorists have used a multicopter, or modified model plane, to attack a major public outdoor event in the U.S.

A spinoff from that model was that I used a bit different version of the software (to control a plane using servos, rather than multicopter variable thrust ) and exact same controller and GPS hardware, to control an electric plane to fly where I wanted, and to land however I wanted, without my input. And that included the capability to make it be at specific altitudes at specific check points in the sky. And I could have easily made those check points and altitudes to be VERY steep descents like 45 degree dives or even steeper. Now, I did NOT do that, I used gentle descent angles for safe landings, but I saw how it could indeed be used as a Kamikaze Drone.

Not saying that is what Iran's drone is using for the guidance, either. Just making clear that off-the-shelf VERY inexpensive hardware and software is out there with some incredible accuracy capabilities (as in, 3 meters or less). The Genie is long out of the bottle. Not MIL-SPEC, but these are not being flown in all-weather conditions, either.

BTW - my success with my first multicopter, using a $10 Nylon frame and everything else learned from the internet (including the controller and GPS stuff), is what then opened the door for me to make my 1/16 Lunar Module Quadcopter and the Mars Lander Quadcopter models.

Good info, George !

Do they have access to the boards and chips required in Persia to create these POS drones ?

AMAZON and eBay "serve the world" . . .

Frankly, they probably get their stuff directly from China.

George,

Thank for your contribution to this thread. With your extensive experience in RC models, you helped to simplify and explain a lot of questions that may come up !
