This appears to be a VERY early Xacto knife set. It is (was) a three knife set, but the handles (one is missing) appear to have some type of paint finish on them.
Also, the blades under the top lid are held in by slots in a strip of wood. Lastly, the flyer included with the set shows the company names as “Xacto Crescent Products Company”, which I think was their original and ‘founding’ name. This set may be from the very early 40s, possibly very late 30s. Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-X-...AAOSwcJhfxQN 6 Earl

I have a 3 knife set nearly that old, but does not have the painted handle knives.
Slotted top for the blades, and it is the "angle type" box.

Sue has put two pristine #89 Xacto Deluxe Cabinet Sets up on ebay.
She added some additional items, but not to the extent of the one I bought from her earlier this year for $239. I doubt they are going to sell at the price she has on them. One is $289, the other is $299, plus $39 shipping each. This pricing is well above what any others have sold for. The last #89 set I got was complete and appeared UNUSED. I paid $40. I'm not sure I would pay $300+ for a complete #99 set.

Yeah, I saw those pop up the other day. Nice sets, but like you say, pretty expensive for sure.

I agree these are “pristine” sets but I’m not in the market for a set like that presently. I hope Sue gets what she is asking for those. Your $40 purchase on an unused #89 was a really amazing deal! I bought too many personal rockery gifts for myself this Christmas I’m pretty tapped out

Sue should have put them up on ebay at the beginning of December.
If she did it then, they stood a chance of someone purchasing them as a Christmas gift. Now, I bet they sit for MONTHS at these prices.

There was a Pre-WWII Xacto pocket knife on ebay a couple days ago.
Apparently Xacto was founded in 1917. That's about all I have gleaned about Pre-WWII Xacto other than it looks like most of their pre-war business was in syringes.

The pristine #89 set that I got for $40 (plus $20 shipping) was only 55 miles from my home.
If I would have realized where it was coming from, I would have just drove to pick it up instead of paying $20 shipping. By the time I noticed it was coming from the Mt Clemens area, it was too late and already shipped.

Earl-
The set that you previously noted as "Very old" on ebay was not as old as you think. The flyer that came with it at the top right of one of the pages states that they have 43 years of manufacturing experience. We know they were founded in 1917, that makes the set ~1960.

Hmmm.... Well, their founding must go back further than 1917 then, as that flyer still lists them with a downtown New York City address and I know that before 1960 they were at the Long Island City address where they stayed until the very early 80s when they were bought by Hunt Mfg and moved to North Carolina. That paper box that set came in was well before 1960 also.
I understand the very, very early background of the company was in surgical blades and such, so THAT history may go much further back than 1917 even. Earl
