No, that’s not a bad record at all.

And all kidding aside, that has to be a bit of slow motion nightmare seeing a rocket under chute drifting towards traffic on a road or highway. As you say, a rocket is an easy thing to replace, but car damage is quite a bit more expensive, or worse yet (my biggest fear) would be for a driver to over-react to the descending rocket and run off the road/crash/hit someone else, etc., and then it gets really, really scary.

Of those possible alternatives, a rocket is a small cost to pay...but it does always hurt just a bit to loose one.

What does 442 stand for, you ask? Oldsmobile 442.
Before I became a BAR I was into a different form of rocket power.

I had a high school friend who was into 442's. He and his dad had two 1st gens, one was a convertible, and a 2nd gen convertible. His dad taught auto body and he became a body man too. Their 442's were impeccable!

The original meaning of 442 was:
4-Barrel carburetor.
4-speed manual transmission
2- exhaust (dual) pipes

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !

I eventually learned that. However, when I was young, for the life of me I couldn't understand why a 442 had a 400 or a 455 under the hood.

....perhaps.

I was in college during the CB craze....and the car was known around Las Cruces, NM as the Rotary Rocket mobile....so there's that.

That's what I suspected. Friday as I was leaving work I was in a line of traffic at a stoplight. I had the windows down and could smell that someone ahead of me had something cool out for a cruise. As we turned onto Kellogg Avenue, I saw a 1968 or 69 Olds 442 two cars ahead of me. Looked like it was a grey green color and was nicely kept. I couldn't get within 100 feet or so because the car in front of me was puttering along, but the construction meant that he was in front of me all the way down to I-275. As I got on the ramp, traffic cleared, and I expected him to punch it, but he just cruised on out US 52.
