Default Road Trip

Road Trip
I'm on a Road Trip across the U.S..
I did this in 2002 and 2003.
I had so much fun that I wanted to repeat this trip with a few changes in mind.
I'm in Denver, CO today.
Did Red Rocks and downtown Denver.
I'm going to the southwest on over to San Diego.
Any suggestions?

Penrose? Not much to see other than saying that you have been there.

I did the cross country road trip a couple of years ago. It was a bucket list thing. The drive through the mountains from Denver to Salt Lake City was a highlight. I did 3300 miles in a rental car returned it in Reno and flew home.

I only have a few more states to see and I will be able to say I have seen them all.

Head S on I-25 to Walsenberg. West on 160 to Durango. Night in Durango; Do the train to Silverton; tour the town or do a mine tour. Night again in Durango.

Next morning W on 160 to Mesa Verde cliff dwelings; tour them; they are awesome. W on 160 to 4 Corners. Its an Indian tourist trap but should be seen once. Continue on 160 into AZ to Jct 89 S to Flagstaff. Spend the night; check coolant in the morning.

89A S through Sedona (you can stop; it's touristy but in a good way ; the views are spectacular) to Congress. 71 S (or West) to Aguila. 60 to Quartzsite. 95 S to Yuma. Night in Yuma; get up early; I-8 to San Diego.

On that day from Flagstaff to Yuma, you'll drive through some of the most beautiful and most desolate areas of the country, all on the same day.

I did what's left of Route 66 several times while ferrying my daughter's car to California and back when she made the mistake of living there for a couple of years. I've been on most of it out west, but not the Chicago to St Louis section. I'm going to try to do that this fall.

Thanks guys.
Not sure what I'll get to see.
Today, I did Breckenridge, CO.
Rode the ski lift to half way up the Mountain.
The time zone changes are screwing with my head and body.
The people in CO are insane drivers.
What speed limit?

Depending on what you are into, either the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas are kinda on the way.
A very wide and quality selection of National parks West of GC and North-East of SAN as well.

If you like to ride the waves (or want to learn), check the conditions and spend a few days around either Newport Beach or Swami's Beach.

Don't underestimate the altitude sickness. Take it slow, and give your body time (days, in some cases) to adjust.

Speed Limits SUCK.
Especially when driving my Corvette with a 210mph speedometer.
It is the only car I have ever owned that will not bury the speedo, but has done a track and GPS verified honest 194mph. Engine is only slightly modded with a Callaway Honker cold air kit, shorty headers, MSD Ignition, custom ECM dyno tune, full 3"x-pipe Stainless duals to 2-Chamber Flowmaster mufflers.
In Michigan the speed limits are mere suggestions on freeways. I have often passed Michigan State Police troopers doing 90+mph in 70-75 zones and they rarely give me a second look or pull me over. Generally when they see my factory hanging parking pass and proving grounds pass they just laugh and let me go.
I once got passed by an armored MSP SRT SWAT vehicle doing over 100mph. I was doing 93 in the left lane and he was riding my bumper. I just followed him at 106 about a mile back.

Those crazy drivers here in Colorado are all the Californians that have moved here!
Be glad you aren’t visiting in the winter when there is snow on the ground!

Default Titan Missile Silo Museum Yuma, AZ

Geez, if you're enjoying the heat that much, check out the Titan Missile Silo near Yuma, AZ.

I was going to visit there this vacation, but the heat was too much for me. Cut my vacation short and flew back home early.

My cross the country trip and back to Alaska was done in my personal airplane.

I had fun, but by the time I got back to Alaska, you can say I'm roasted past well done. Greenhouse canopy (stunt plane with bubble canopy).

Mike
