Just from memory I thought they might be balsa, but taking them out of the box and looking over them again (and flexing them some), I'd say they are basswood. Too 'flexible' (without actually snapping in two) to be balsa. And I think they are too light in weight to be birch.

Sorry to answer this so late, but it looks like Earl confirmed my suspicions that the conduit strips are indeed basswood, rather than balsa.

I can't remember what the square strips are that I picked up at a hobby shop, but I bought them along with some dowels at the same time...
