Sorry about the crash, but I must say - Those are beautiful photos!

Ouch!

I cloned the Farside (not the X) and in an early flight I managed to assemble the three motors with the second stage motor in the wrong way. The result was the same as yours. Good first stage, then staging and ballistic return. Fortunately the ground at that site at that time was pretty soft and there wasn't too much real damage, just mud/dirt to remove.

And really fortunately, the blowby from the first stage motor didn't light the second one from the top!

Whitney,
I built a Semroc Farside-X last year. I did a 24mm booster. I used a technique Gary Rosenfield posted about for mounting surface mount fins on a minimum diameter rocket. I used basswood on this booster. The tabs hide nicely in a moderate fillet, so the booster looks stock.

I hope to fly mine come Springtime. I think I may try a C11/A8/A8 due to field size. (Smallish grassy field, I don’t want to fly it on gravel and cactus fields like Pueblo.)

Estes has made the A3-6T available again.
It may be a good candidate for the top sustainer used in a 13/18mm adapter.

I have a stash of 1/2A6-0s and 1/2A6-4s I intend to use atop a B14-0 for the first flight of the Astron Farside/Farside-X I'm building.

I have most of the discontinued and LONG-discontinued 13 and 18mm Estes motors in my vintage motor hoard. Have several paks of A5 -S shorties too.
Need to use some of my 1/2A3-0Ts with a 1/4A3-4T sustainer in my Mini Brute Midget and Beta.

Yes, there is such a thing as NORMAL
, if you have to ask what is "NORMAL" , you probably aren't !

Failure may not be an OPTION, but it is ALWAYS a POSSIBILITY.
ALL systems are GO for MAYHEM, CHAOS, and HAVOC !
