Default Semroc Nike Tomahawk

I received this kit in a gift exchange *last* christmas, so thought it was high time to build it. I was pleasantly surprised that it uses built-up fins using a balsa frame and coated card stock. The upper stage fins are 1/16" balsa, the instructions have you draw a line, and hand sand for the bevel, which works good enough for sport scale. Engine mount is standard Semroc fare, with a Kevlar leader. This is a fun old-school build so far. Anyone's who built this kit, feel free to chime in with recommendations.

I JUST started mine over this Thanksgiving break too.
Just about done with my 1/45 Little Joe II, so it was next in the queue.
Send me any tips.
I'm going 24mm on the mount but that's really the only mod I'm making.

Seeing as I'm into R/C as well I usually use a piece of iron-on Monokote to hold the engine hook in place of the masking tape on the mount. Sometimes I wet that area with epoxy and wind kevlar line around that area to hold the hook instead.

If you don't like sanding...you could use the Tomahawk fins as cores for cardstock covers that provide the sharp leading edge. Fill in the tip edge with Elmers, or some other filler.

Got the fins finished and mounted. The diamond profile of the skinned balsa frame is really nice, far better than I could get with balsa. The laser cut fin frame pieces fit very loosely together, so they were tough to glue together in the proper shape. I recessed the motor mount as Jeffy mentioned in his thread back in 2013. With an ST-7 inside an ST-16, there's plenty of room to move the motor hook when inserting an engine, and it looks *much* better without the hook hanging out. All the exposed tube ends were sealed with CA on the inside.

For the upper stage, I substituted a balsa tube connector (BTC-8) for the hollow coupler, so that I can use the top tube as a small payload section. The two small holes are for nylon screws to hold the NC on, two larger holes for an altimeter payload. Not that I expect this to fly very high with the 18mm mount, I just hate to seal up a payload section Who knows what I might want to put in there years from now?

Huh, I never finished this thread! I'll have to find a photo and upload it. It's been finished for a couple years.
