Estes Deep Space Transport Build
Here is a kit I found in my stash, I think it is from the 90s. The kit is in real good shape for the age and is a fun large build. The Face Card has the rocket coming in at 3.65oz, heck mine was heavier than that before I even started painting. The build is straight forward, decided to build the rocket first then brush on 3 coats of balsa sealer. After the balsa was nice and dried I shot Old Krylon Gloss white and hope to have the decals on today. This is a pretty big rocket for a C engine, should be interesting. One thing I like about these old kits is the instructions are much more detailed than the instructions that come with the Estes kits today.

Looks good - lot of detail. I'm looking forward to seeing it done.

Looking good there scigs. This kit obviously drew a great deal from the Centuri USS America Super Kit, except of course for the nose cone. The Centuri kit was a heavy bird for single engine model rockets when it was introduced in 1975. I think it tipped the scales at about 5.5 ounces. It too is a fun, detailed build, but I have not flown mine yet.
Earl P.S.--Agree on the current Estes instructions. I made a comment here just yesterday that the latter year Estes instructions are VERY sparse. Not too much a problem for us older dudes, but for the younger set I could see it might present some problems. It would not take THAT much work to add a few more descriptive words to the instruction steps, but I don't know if the instructions are being done 'in house' at Estes or whether that is sub'ed out to the Chinese. I would think not, but not sure why the are so skimpy on build steps descriptions. Maybe that is the way the younger 'A-D-D' generation likes it. Dunno. Earl

Earl, thanks for bringing that up, I really like the Centuri Facecard. Interesting part, look at the face card of the Centuri America kit. You can see the spirals and other imperfections in the build.....heck if they could not make the display rocket look perfect, then why should I..😂 As you can see from my laziness, the spirals are showing just fine on my build.
Here is my Deep Space Transport all done with the decals. Final weight is 4.0oz, package has it listed at 3.75oz. I was really never that interested in this kit but now that she is complete with decals, not a bad looking rocket. The decals went on with no issues. Another KISS build Out Of Bag...OOB construction, 3 coats of Brodak sealer, one light coat of old Krylon Acryli Quik primer followed by Krylon Acryli Quik Gloss white. |

All the "Super Kits" need a 24mm mount.
Now that we have the C5-3 back, one can get away with a 18mm engine other than an Aerotech/Quest composite D, but I certainly wouldn't even think of trying a C6-3. With 24mm, one could use anything from a C11 to a F39.

Ed Brown, long time Estes motor guru, told me once in an email that the C5 motor came about because Grant Boyd of Centuri wanted a bigger kick engine for the Super Kits. By that point (mid 70s), Estes was once again making all of Centuri’s motors (I think the Centuri motor plant south of Phoenix near Chandler, AZ was shut down sometime in’74).
And so, Centuri ‘introduced’ the Super C’s in 1977. I don’t think Estes started showing the Super C’s in their catalog until 1980. Earl
